AC Question

I got Nexus 5 shipped from US to India. It is currently loaded with Android Version 5.0.1 and Build No LRX22C. I am using Airtel SIM with a 3G data plan. The 'Preferred Network Type' in the settings is set to 3G. But the phone works only in 2G ie EDGE network

You probably need to modify or create a new APN in the APN settings.

From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
Tap Settings.
Tap More.
Tap Cellular networks.
Tap Access Point Names.
