My phone doesn't automatically connect to strongest Wi-Fi available, any reason for this?

I have an LG V40 with Android 9 on the Sprint network. I noticed that it doesn't automatically switch to the strongest WiFi connection available. To me, it seems an obvious feature for a WiFi-enabled device to have, right?

I looked all through the settings and can't see where to set this. I've looked for solutions online and they either describe features not on my phone or say to use a 3rd party app.

So what am I missing?

Which wifi signal does it seem to prefer?
Password vs no password?
First vs second signal?

Do you have multiple access points in your house? If you use wi-fi extenders, I've found that they generally don't work that well. If the phone has connected to one access point in your house, and then you walk to another part of your house where there's a stronger access point, the phone usually still hangs onto the original access point, even if the signal is poorer. This is why mesh wi-fi network systems (like Nest Wi-fi) are much better -- there's a much smoother handoff between nodes when you're moving around.

If you have multiple açcess points on the same network you MUST adjust the power output of each unit to run at a low level. If they are all set to high, then your devices will find it difficult to hand over to the nearest point.

It's very much a trial and error process to set them up correctly. But of a "black art" really.

if you are talking about different access points in the home, you can use smart connect in the router. most newer routers have this setting and will auto connect to the strongest signal.

Further to my earlier post, it's also very important that each access point is set to use a different channel number, including that of the router.
