My Phone Freezes Frequently

I have been using this since early November 2012 and for the past month or so the phone freezes quite frequently. This does not seem to be associated with any particular apps. It happens with various usage types viz. after disconnecting a call, playing 'Stick Tennis', looking up a contact etc.

Sometimes I get a ,message "Process has stopped" or "Contacts has stopped".

Sometimes I have to restart the phone to get it back to life but more often I am required to open the battery and put it back.

This happens virtually once every day, sometimes more often.

What could be wrong & what should I do (short of taking it to the service center) ?

Would appreciate some advise from people who have faced similar issues and have solved it.

Have you put a custom ROM on it? Rooted or anything like that?

No. It is not rooted.

I was having that problem and it was getting more frequent even freezing every hour or so, I uninstall whatsapp 2 days ago and that did it for me, up time 51:02 and counting.
I won't be installing whatsapp until an update comes out
