My phone spontaneously reset itself and wiped out some settings

So here's an odd error. Yesterday afternoon, my phone spontaneously reset itself. This in itself isn't so weird. It's happened to my Samsung phones in the past, and I've read similar accounts on Android Central as well. What's weird, however, is that many of the custom settings in my settings menu were reset to their defaults. For example, smart stay and finger sensor gestures turned off. My lock screen was reset. Haptic feedback was disabled (which is weird because out of the box this setting is enabled). Bixby and/or my SMS app has also changed in a weird, subtle way. I regularly speak the Bixby command "Open Messages and message <my wife's name> saying ..." Previously this worked fine, but now it attempts to send a text message to my wife's email address rather than phone number (and her work email to boot, so I may be in trouble come Monday :) ). Nothing short of opening the contact card and deleting the email addresses fixed this issue.

Anyone experienced something like this on their Note 8?

did you take any updates before this happened? and no, it's never happened to me with any phone ever.

you also might look at any new apps that were installed just prior to this. and I, personally, would consider a full, hard factory reset.

Nope, no updates. At least not recently, and certainly not coincident with when this issue happened. I probably should have mentioned in my original post that fortunately, my app data itself is still intact. Social media accounts are still logged into, email works, etc. It's basically just several of the things that can be adjusted via the settings menu which were clobbered.

As for the hard reset, I think I'll do just that if I see this issue crop up even one more time.

that's what I'd do. if no other weirdness then I'd wait it out. that's what I'm doing. I have one purple icon in settings that just appeared one day. not worth a FR but weird like yours.

I've had this happen once previously(last year with Note 7). I apparently had forgotten to do a factory reset on the phone I sent it in to Verizon. When they got the phone and reset it-it somehow reset itself by my Google acct info attached to the phone which in turn reset my new phone that used the same Google acct info. This was what the Verizon tech rep explained and just previous to calling in to Verizon I'd found some similar info which was obviously confirmation.
