my phone won't recognize my gmail account. had to do a factory reset. what do i do?

i have a galaxy note 5. somehow i got locked out and had to do a factory reset. wants my google account but i had to change my password on that as well. now when i put in my gmail account it says please log in to account that was synced with this device. why won't it work.
