Funny thing happened this morning with my Pixel 2XL. As per my usual routine, upon awakening I put my phone on the charger and went about my morning shave, shower, breakfast, coffee, and news fix routine. After getting dressed I went to pocket my phone and I saw the time display was showing 7:36 am. Well that's the time it was when I plugged the phone into the (stock) charger. It was now almost 9:00 o'clock. Odd.

I unplugged the phone from the charger, activated the fingerprint sensor, and....nothing. Phone is stuck on 7:36. Unresponsive to the fingerprint sensor. Pressed the power button for a second and released. No change. Long press on the power button, over 10 seconds. Phone powered down. I powered it back up and everything seems fine now.

Why would it do this?

One time glitch? Or cause for concern?

I'm leaning towards 1 time glitch, IF it happens again or starts happening more often THEN I would be concerned. IF it does start happening, then you might want to try safe mode and see if it STILL happens. Also you may need or want to back out the last few apps you installed and seeing if that helps. Try the apps one at a time.

Here's how to enter safe mode....

Thanks for the link to the instructions for entering safe mode.

As to newly installed apps, I haven't installed one for weeks.

That link didn't work for me - took me to some thread about Google Wallet from several years ago.
The forum keeps altering the URL with each iteration. Try the link in my original post, #4 above.

Oh, wait. You did. Weird. AC forum doesn't like Verizon URLs, I guess.
