My REAL thoughts on this phone

My thinking is this, (I have not had any hands on with this device yet) I think this is a major advancement in mobility technology and I believe there will be much activity with this type of device. This being a gen 1 iteration there will be flaws and growing pains. to Me it seems like a very advanced bit of tech, it also has some of the fragility of old school PDA/pre-capacitive screen based phones. I still want to see one and decide how i feel about it.

I played with one in an ATT store last night and almost pulled the trigger but I'm gonna wait until it is in peoples hands for a few weeks or maybe a couple months and see what issues arise. I did not expect to come away as impressed as I was. I was expecting the screen to be super soft and fragile and to have some give kind of like the touch resistive displays of devices like the early HTC smartphones and the Nokia N900 and it was not like that at all. I loaded up a game and played it and it was very responsive to light touch. While the screen is noticeably not glass it did not have any give unless you try to push hard (which I did not). My main concern is not with how the screen will hold up but more about how much dust and dirt may make its way into the device. I also don't see myself buying a device with no water resistance now that most mid tier and above smartphones have even slight water resistance. That said, I'm a tech addict and may end up with one in my hand in a few weeks if no major issues arise with the reviewers and early adopters.

Given that the screen tech is capacitive I actually kind of expect the screen to feel fairly firm and squishy like the older style screens did. Hopefully we will see some kind of dust/water resistance as the devices evolve/improve (I would say this is mainly at the folding/pivot point)

I don't think those old screens were capacitive unless I'm thinking of something else. I'm thinking of the pressure sensitive ones were you actually had to press instead of just touch.

If I recall they were resistive touchscreens.

Sorry if this is a dumb thought, But I have to wonder.. If you know your phone can potentially be damaged by doing something.. would it not make sense to avoid doing that something? and reduce the risk of damage.. Just saying. ;) I think if you are careful with this device you should not have any major issues. We all survived with our early generation Phones/PDA's

Yes, but when it's as simple as a fingernail that can damage the screen, that's pretty fragile, there's a lot of things that will damage it, so avoiding is more difficult.

Time will tell on this. It's a sit back and see what happens deal, just not looking good at first, but real time results will be the true answer.

Yes, you can always be careful. The thing is I've had screens scratch where I couldn't figure out how it happened. On glass screens you can at least add a screen protector. If someone can't design a protector for the fold and something gets caught in between it pretty much history.
Putting the delicate screen aside I just don't see a need for this device. It's cute, but I just don't need a convertible device. The outside screen is also too small for me. That doesn't mean that anyone else shouldn't go out and buy it. In fact I think it's great that there interest in this device. It's the only chance of future generations being developed.

I actually like the form factor of the Huawei device, however since the screens face outward that makes it even easier to damage.

Yah, Not a fan of screen outward folding (seems like that's just tempting the fates) :)

Interesting, Wonder what the cost will be. since they are not expected till late 2020 I bet there will be other developments in this space between now and then..

It is still a year away, but another example of where tech is headed. I wouldn't even guess as to the price at release.

in what real world scenario would this occur? PS, women with fingernails have run there fingernails across my screen. Maybe I got lucky. It did not scratch.
It doesn't have to be a fingernail. That's just an example.

Exactly. I read that one reviewer was using it outside and a butterfly landed on it and scratched the screen. Probably with it's fingernail.

Actually to clarify, they don't have fingernails, that tiny claws (helps them remain stable when they land on stuff)

Got mine from AT&T, they overnighted it, which was nice. Didn't want to travel 25 miles to the closest store in Orlando to see one. AT&T or Bestbuy. Loving it, got use to unlocked phones. All the AT&T bloatware, wow. Got about 25% off with 2 yrs. Agreement. I usually careful with all my phones, I use them a few or more months, then sell on swappable or Ebay. Note 10+ on swappa very soon.

Do you plan on using this one for a few months also?
