My Samsung Note 3 charges to 100% but will not hold the charge.

After barely an hour it is dead. I have purchased a new battery and it still does the same thing.

A short circuit somewhere perhaps?

As old as that phone is, that "new" battery may have been sitting on a shelf for years, slowly degrading all that time and is now useless without ever being inside a phone.
