I got the shield TV a moth ago and loved the hardware but was utterly disappointed with nvidia's interpolation and implantation of Android. The navigation and interaction was slow and lacking. The fact it didn't have the regular play store apps, and I couldn't use my amazon prime video really made me sad. So I had someone unlock the boot loader and do the custom rom, giving me full Android OS. Basically the nvidia tablet interface and now I am loving it. I have amazon prime video and all my other favorite apps from the regular play store. And the interaction and desktop is smooth and normal Android OS like. I picked up a 20 dollar remote from amozon and its great, voice search, keyboard on the back and gyroscope in it. Got the USB to blooth dongle and Xbox remotes for my controller and they are working awesome..

Hope this helps others
This is what I had done

Video looks good. Does the Chromecast feature still work? I'm guessing it doesn't.

I'll have to check. Being that it can natively play anything you would want cast to it. Why would it still be important?

I have a putio account and fast internet so Chromecast is something I use a lot. Why download something if you can just stream it?

But I'm working out how to use it as a media server using RSS feeds from putio too. Having the storage I might as well use it.

Having a full Android OS on it would make that a lot easier but not if it lost Chromecast which is what I use most.

There really is no need to change the version of Android that this thing comes with, you will be losing out on a lot (no 4K Youtube or Netflix and the loss of the wireless game controller being the main ones). Simply root it, install a better Launcher (HALauncher for me as Leanback is terrible), install LMT Launcher over the top of that before using it to set up pie with power/back/home/menu and recent apps buttons. Then install the normal version of Playstore so you have access to everything you would on an AOSP rom running on the Shield. All the above can be done in less than an hour and results in a fantastic experience with full mouse and keyboard support.

I had a Minix before this running vanilla Android, and there is nothing I miss.
