My Sprint store didn't care that I was rooted.

My external speaker blew on my Evo, so I wanted to get it replaced. I didn't, however, want to be bothered putting the phone back to stock. I went into the store and they asked my name. I said well before I tell you my name, my phone is rooted, is that going to be a problem to get my speaker replced? They said no worries, we all have our phones rooted as well. They replaced the speaker with no issues. They did however want my Gmail account and password. I said there is no reason for you to have that information. They said we might need to do a reset on your phone. I said that is nuts, there is no reason to reset my phone for replacing a blown speaker. They didn't get my account information and the speaker was replaced, so all's well that end's well I guess. Just a bit of advice, you don't have to give them that personal information, especially for something as mundane as a speaker replacement.

I've been to a few stores where they didn't care either. I don't think its a HUGE issue unless you are sending it back to be replaced. Most reps I've encountered, Sprint or otherwise have their phones rooted/jailbroken/etc.

They only care if the phone needs to be replaced or have work done on it that will lead to it being replaced. Like mentioned above, almost all Sprint sales guys/gals and Sprint techs on the phone have their phones rooted and actually recommend ROMs!

I've taken mine in and they didn't care it was rooted either. They just said that I would be responsible for unrooting if they needed to send it in for a replacement.

If a rep ever tells you it must be unrooted or have a different rom running in order to be replaced and "sent back" then have them look up Authorized Service Center Methods and Procedures (specifically posted early April). It clearly lays out that this is not the case. A rooted can be sent back without any problems. Other than noting in eticket that the tech suspects the phone is rooted, it is not handled any differently and can be exchanged if the tech needs to.

*Sorry for off-topic posts but....*

Great to see a familiar name on these forums, long time Pre user who gave up the ghost and moved to Android w/ an Evo as well. :D

Oh yeah I remember you from precentral!

Of course Sprint didn't like people taking in their Pre's with my overclocking kernels installed. :-$

When I got my Evo from a store outside of Philly the rep that was selling it to me asked if I wanted them to root it for me. I at that point didnt know much about rooting but now that I do it seems odd that he had asked me if I wanted it rooted.

They can't do anything, rooting is so legal, and has been for quite some time. Stealing services is not though.

....So to shed some light on your rooting comments i can tell you this from my perspective and personal knowledge. As a SPRINT EMPLOYEE who works in a COOPERATE store not a 3RD PARTY store. I of course like most enthusiast love my phones all the fun things such as roots, roms, themes and whatever other cool stuff there is to modify them. I like my phones like my cars and women, hot AND fast. In the real world though we have to be fare to everyone. Any employee who just willy nilley tells you how to root your phone is an idiot on the verge of getting fired. Its like when you goto a car dealer, there not going to warranty parts and labor on a car that was raced in the streets with nitrous until the engine blew up. Let's all be grown-ups here. On a daily basis we all have to follow are policies. Now If you come to my store spouting off "my phone is rooted, I get free mobile hotspot and you guys can't do anything about it". Then of course I'm gonna say whatever and tell you to Go F>>> yourself, but if everyone is casual then I would answer questions, solve problems and get you up and running how ever I'm authorized. I will of course keep my rooting conversations to a minimum and tell you that everything is legal but the store just can't give you that info. Then I would say just type your questions into Google and you can learn how to do anything. I think that's fair. Thats what I did, I mean heck I'm on my 3rd rooted phone and loving every minute. I don't know a lot of computer code or anything like that, I just like to read about stuff and try to figure out how to get it for myself. Sorry to be so lengthy, all I'm saying is I figured out how to do what I want to my toys and never, ever blame anyone but myself if things go wrong because I rolled the dice. Ya feel me?;)

I took my device in yesterday to my local store because my charge port is loose. I didn't mention it and they are shipping in a replacement device for Monday. I was a little worried that I'd have to do all the work to go back to stock, but definitely am glad to hear this is not as much of an issue as it used to be. It's one thing if you brick it and try to get Sprint to replace it, but it seems perfectly reasonable to send back a device that has a hardware malfunction, completely unrelated.

See, its sounds to me like you just used the grown up approach of don't ask, don't tell. I like that.
They're gonna return it to assurion anyways..
