My thoughts after having the Vivid for around 12 hours.

He won't be able to receive MMS through WiFi but an easy solution would be to send e-mails with attachments instead. They can be just as instant and easy to respond back to.

Can this phone fully operate on WiFi only? I.e., can you receive mms on WiFi only. I'm cheap, and I have WiFi at work and home. I hardly ever turn on my data. I noticed with hubby's atrix, that his data has to be turned on to get pics by text. Thanks!

Try whatsapp its an instant messenger app you can use it to send pics and videos too it uses the internet so your wifi setup will power it just fine. Also i like it because you can send video files up to 12mb unlike video msg which i think has a max of 1 or 2.

So that will work for the Atrix.. Thanks!! What about the Vivid. Do I need this app for the vivid to work, or will it work on wifi? Thanks!!!

My Inspire screen was cracked, so I'm looking for a new phone to buy.

It's funny. I think that if the Vivid had been released in September or early October, the reviews we're seeing would be a lot better. Put up against all the hot phones the other carriers are getting, the Vivid is getting clobbered in the press, even though it's a good phone. It's that hyperdriven Moore's Law situation again. We get the best we can get, Knowing the darn thing is going to be obsolete almost from the day we get it. What are ya gonna do? What we have now were desktop computers 10 years ago. By our next upgrade, they're Really gonna be handheld computers. Quad core? DDR3 RAM? That's a modern desktop, just less storage and RAM.

yes, whatsapp will work on the vivid and it will work on wifi, 3g, 4g... any data connection will work. However, the other user needs to have the app too. If you put it on your phone you will probably see that many of your contacts already have it. Its pretty popular since it works on android, iphone, and blackberry.

Why will the Vivid not receive mms on wifi only? My inspire will receive mms when i'm only connected to wifi only.

Thanks

I got an HTC Vivid yesterday, coming from an iPhone 4, and I love it! I was between the Skyrocket and the Vivd. Both ATT stores I visited said they prefer the Vivid over the SR. My deal breakers were I feel the Sense UI is better than Touchwiz, and I feel the SR feels very cheap and built quality is non-existent. It feels like if you look at it the wrong way it will break. When you pick up the SR and then pick up the Vivid, you can tell which one feels better. I think the Vivid looks better too. I got the white model. Looks even better than a white iPhone.

Just ordered mine online, a regular black one. Hopefully I get it early next week. I'll give a full review from an Android rookie's perspective.

Yeah, Engadget's reviewer (Joseph Volpe) must be seriously pissed about his SGS2 getting obsoleted so quickly by the skyrocket, or something. The thing that ticked me off was that the items most of he ticked off in comparison to the skyrocket were actualy plusses to me (and he didn't even allow that some people might agree with me):

It's (slightly) thicker and heavier than the Skyrocket. And? The skyrocket just seems like a flimsy sliver of plastic to me. I have never doubted HTC's build quality (I really wish that Sprint had coverage that would have allowed me to keep my Touch Pro 2, that phone was sick hardware for its day, which, being two years ago, is a frightening testament to Moore's Law), and my Vivid does not disappoint in that regard. Samsung, on the other hand just doen't seem to get it. I owned an SCH-i760 on Verizon a few years back, and while it performed well, it still felt flimsy despite its rather sizable girth, especially with the (thankfully factory-supplied in box) extended battery. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I'll take Christina Hendricks over Kate Moss any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Its benchmarks are "slower" than Sammy's offerings. And? Rather than drool over numbers like any of the geekerati, I prefer to look at real world performance. Will it do what I want it to without choking under the load? I test drove both LTE phones in store, and found no difference whatsoever in how snappy and responsive they were. Hell, even my iPhone 3GS with its now (comically) underpowered hardware did what I wanted it to. It did seem to slow down some with iOS5, but only infrequently. I jumped ship for display and customization options, not benchmarks.

Is the battery smaller? Yes. However, I'm well accustomed to having chargers on hand for my iPhone at nearly all times, so this really doesn't bother me.

The one plus Volpe lists, the screen, is absolutely gorgeous, and a clear winner over the Skyrocket's recycling of the Infuse's screen. Better resolution, more hand-friendly aspect ratio, and a high-end LCD that beats the bright, almost neon-sign-esque Super AMOLED plus.

All that being said, to each their own, I just feel that the Vivid is a better fit for me and my needs.

Thank You! A Very well put comment, all the way around. It sums up my feelings about the phone and I don't even have it yet. I just ordered it last night when I got home from work.

Another point that influenced me to go HTC over Sammy is HTC's overall better record at updating their phones and Sammy's horrid one. Sure, there are exceptions. The TBolt comes to mind. HTC still has a far better record of updating their products. Furthermore, ATT and HTC have confirmed an ICS update early next year. They have incentive to meet that target, given the flak they took on the Gingerbread update.

I'm going to have to add the word "geekerati" to my dictionary. It is a priceless description of the gadget elite (regardless of gadget type).

Welcome to the AC Forums. I've been here since June and have learned much in following the Holiday/Raider 4G/Vivid from first leaked pix to release. We have a good crew here, and, together, we'll learn our new Vivids, sort out each other's problems and generally have fun.

OK, first thoughts. It's comfortable to hold, the screen is beautiful, it performs like a dream, especially on Wifi. 4G is inconsistent, but that seems to be a carrier problem, not the phone, as, late at night, the hook up is excellent and glitch free. Call quality is good. The rear speaker is OK, but who's expecting a Bose in a cellphone? I'll be getting a set of ihome speakers for when I'm playing multimedia and can set up. When I'm mobile, a set of earbuds, and a car dock for driving. Camera and video evaluations coming soon. I'm a day into serious use, and this is what I have so far.

I thought that Sammy said the Galaxy S2 was getting ICS in Q1 2012?

Im still trying to figure out what the difference is between the two. Anybody know? I had heard something about it being smaller and taking less space and resources but I couldnt verify it.

Mostly cosmetic things actually. Comparing this to the Rezound (3.5) the only real thing that I notice is support for htesense.com which the Rezound lacks but I think that as a Verizon choice not a difference between 3.0 and 3.5,

Short of a developer dissecting a system dump from both phones there is really no way to tell but if there is a difference I don't think it is much. The two look very close to eachother

The more I use my Vivid, the more I like it, especially as I develop my app loadout. I just added Skype, and it works great, even on fauxG. I expect great things when LTE gets here. Getting to see as well as talk to my wife on my lunchtime call is a treat. Front facing camera works just fine.
