N1 on EDGE seems extremely slow

I have a new N1 and I live in an EDGE only (AT&T) area with good signal. It seems that the N1 compared to other phones I have takes forever to load a web page. I know its not a 3G area and I have been in 3G areas alot, so I know there's definitely a difference.

I can see a significant difference between the N1 and my Nokia E71 in the time it take to load a similar web site in the browser.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on a possible solution? I have one of the latest SIM cards from AT&T.

I'm guessing it is the browser. The browser on that Nokia E71 is no where near as good as the browser on the N1. Have you tried running speed tests on both devices? I'm guessing you are getting the exact same speeds...

Yeah edge is only 150 kb per second more or less. Won't get far with that really.

If you have a friend with a iphone compare them together and what the difference is. Also try clearing your cache and try different browsers. That may help you a little

I know its going to be slow on edge. I am saying on the same egde netowrk the N1 is noticeably slower on pulling up pages and downloading files or prorgams.

Have not had a chance yet. I appreciate your suggestion. What web site or program would you recommend for doing the speed test?

Thanks.

Just do a google search on the phones for mobile speed test. I still believe it has to do with the browsers and the simplicity of the Nokia browser. Is the Nokia browser using webkit?

If you are on Edge and want a significant speed boost, download Opera Mini for Android and use it as your default browser. It compresses all traffic and will increase browsing speed anywhere from 5-10x.

there is a free app in the market called speed test.net. i use this daily to check my network speeds. try it out on EDGE and see. but remember EDGE is limited to 236Kbps, or 0.23Mbps, so it should be around there.
