N4 on T-Mo intermittent loss of data connection

I've been noticing my phone will occasionally lose it's data connection even though there is a strong signal, and it keeps a voice signal. It seems from time to time the blue signal bars will turn gray for a few seconds and it will switch between 3G and H as it tries to reacquire the data connection. This happens when the phone is idling and when I'm using it. (Note this is different from the issue where it is unable to connect to cell data after turning off Wi-Fi)

Its a minor annoyance but annoying all the same. Thoughts?

Try turning data roaming on? If you don't have data roaming on your account it won't cost you anything extra (since it simply won't work). However, many people have reported increased speeds from turning it on, so maybe that and your issue are related.

Hmm. Maybe try setting the APN back to default? Copy down your settings first, in case you want to go back to what you had. This might also fix your wi-fi/cell hand off problem, too.

This isn't a frequent occurrence for me, but it has been happening all day today. I'm assuming T-Mobile is having issues. I'm in north Jersey/lower NYC. Where are you located?

The same thing happens to my except the bars never turn gray. I'll connect to the local wifi and then switch back to hspda but it usually still wont work.

I had a weird one time episode the other day sitting in a restaurant. No data at all - blank. Then it would connect for moments but very very slow. Then later in the parking lot it came back on just fine. I have been in that place before with no issues.

I think I remember hearing there were extra crazy solar flares occurring over the last week? Maybe that explains some things?

I got in the habit of power cycling my phone first thing in the morning when i get up. While its still on the charger. I turn it off for a few minutes, usually while i brush my teeth. Then turn it back on. Shave and grab a shower and when im ready to head to work its back in its normal stand by mode.
Today i forgot to do that and i too noticed a few times where i had cellular bars that were grey then after a few minutes went to Blue. This was when i went out of range of my WiFI at work. But i also noticed it shortly after it had a cellular connection as well. To me its either an issue where its been on for a while and is having issues staying synced with the cellular network OR TMO might be fiddling with with their network in preperatoins for their new prepaid customers who have a lower priority to the network then post paid customer do.

Which radio/baseband version are you on? It's in settings<about phone. Screenshot will do, too.

I will try that, although it may take some time to tell if that works, since it has not happened in a couple of days.

I've definitely read some posts complaining of signal/data issues after updating to the latest "lte killer" radio .48. Take that with a grain of salt because only the vocal minority with issues tend to post their concerns. As someone mentioned it may just be Tmobile. If your radio issues continue you could always flash an "older" radio. Lots of folks, including myself, have noticed improvements moving from the last official radio (.33) to the LG leaked radio (.27). Can find them all here. Just remember different devices (same make/model/etc) can do better on differenet basebands. Lots of variables can come into play...but essentially it's location, location, location.

Interesting, I'll take a look at that thread. I suspected it may be an issue with the phone since similar issues have been reported to happen regardless of location or carrier. Also, this has been happening for a few weeks, and I just upgraded to 4.2.2 this past weekend, so I know that isn't the issue.

Doesnt apply to me. Im on stock 4.2.1 I still have the update notification in my drop down bar.
I tested again after my first reply. In my office, took it off WiFi. Cellular went from blue to grey, 3G icon appeared then dissapeared, 5 seconds later appeared, still grey at this point. after doing this for 3-4 times i decided to power cycle my phone.
Its been up for 30-45 minutes and 25 of that on WiFI. Just now took it off WiFi and within seconds blue 3G icon, then blue H appeared.

That kind of goes with what i was experiencing before. If i dont power cycle it daily i have noticed it will have issues with the connection. Im also on stock APN.

Well this hasn't happened since early Sunday morning so we will see. And, to clarify this issue isn't wifi related although I've had that prob a couple times too.

Just reset the APN settings and rebooted...

This has happened to me as well. Both on 4.2.1 and 4.2.2. Im on t mobile prepaid, in PHX. Shows data connection but will not send/receive data. If I power phone off/on it works fine. Happens once every couple weeks. I know its not a signal issue because it happen a few weeks ago in Arrowhead mall where I get 25mbs down per speedtest app.

Well I haven't really noticed it since the update. It happened once last night but otherwise things have been more stable overall.

pretty sure it was a tmobile network issue. I haven't had an issue for 2 weeks now. I imagine they will have some bumps in the road as they are currently in transition in reassigning networks to include LTE.
