I don't know if this problem is an Nexus 5, Kit Kat or Hangouts issue. I have been having an issue with sending my son text messages. If I go to Hangouts and enter his name or click his picture and send a text message, he doesn't receive it. If I go to him in contacts and click the text message icon beside his mobile number he does get the text message. If I go through Hangouts and click on the down arrow under his name it just says Hangouts. If I go through contacts and click the icon, it shows up in Hangouts with his mobile #. I have deleted him in contacts and re-entered all his data, but the problem persists. I have a feeling this may be happening with other hangouts, but this is the only one I'm sure of. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

if you want to send sms via hangouts you have to set hangouts to default on settings

settings-->More...-->Default SMS app-->[set it to Hangouts]

also update Hangouts to the latest version

Thank you for your prompt reply. On my N5, Hangouts is the default app and I have no other texting apps installed. Most other texts work fine. It's just this one contact for sure, but I suspect others.

If you have an email in the account the top suggestion is the email whether the person is Hangouts activated or not. If you look below that it is the person's number. I have added more than one person as a Hangouts conversation instead of SMS without knowing.

Just out of curiosity, why would a messaging app default to an email address?

It doesn't default to the email address; it defaults to the hangouts account associated with that email address. Hangouts is Google's messaging app - it defaults to it both because Google is trying to drive adoption and also because data based messaging solutions often work better with respect to group messaging, MMS, etc.

Thanks for your reply and be patient, because I'm trying to understand this. I have seen how the old messaging app worked because my wife has a Nexus 4, I bought the Nexus 5. She sends every type of message through her messaging app with zero problems, except now some of the people she texts, she no longer has a picture even if there is one in contacts. It's because if that person has a Google account without a photo in their profile there will be no picture. She very much dislikes Hangouts, and refuses to use it. I'm beginning to see why. I came from an iPhone, so my experience is all with their app which seems to have figured all this out. If I wanted to send a text, photo, video or sound file the phone knew what to do. I suppose I'm misunderstanding what Hangouts is supposed to be. I have read this and other forums enough to know that many others were very excited about SMS being added to Hangouts, but to me it is overly complicated. I need to understand it, so I can make sure that when I'm trying to communicate something important to someone, I can rely on them getting it. Another annoying thing is when I try to add my daughter to a group message, Hangouts wants to know if I want to send an Invite. NO, I just want to include her in a group message. Sorry, I'm new to Android. As great as it is in many ways, I've spent an inordinate amount of time trying to use it. Let alone understand it.

If you are struggling with using Hangouts then touch the menu in top right corner and choose Help to be taken to a web tutorial including videos. It explains the different ways of using it to communicate with others including how to use it to SMS.
