Nandroid Backup?

So, I'm pretty darn new to this whole "Android Smartphone" thing, but I've successfully accomplished both rooting and custom recovering my phone.

My question is, when I Nandroid Backup my phone, what files/folders are the ones that are the backup. For that matter, when I go to, say, flash in a custom ROM, what files go where for this?

I ask because when I looked in the nandroid folder on my phone, going all the way in, I find a couple image files, but looking at the Rodimus zip file, none of the files look even remotely similar, so I'm at a complete loss as to how I would replace the nandroid backup of my phone with the Rodimus ROM...


Any advice or assistance to be offered here?

Also, this isn't to say that I specifically want to install Rodimus on my phone. It just happens to be the one I downloaded and looked at, so I'm using it as an example.
