I will be upgrading my mother's phone tonight and am not too familiar with the Captivate.

She is not rooted and does not want to root and void her warranty. That said, I am concerned that people are having issues with the upgrade. Does the stock recovery have the ability to perform a Nandroid backup? It does not appear that KIES will back up anything more than downloaded apps.

Apps and contacts are not my concern. I am more worried about the buggy firmware causing issues with the phone that cannot be corrected by a simple uninstall/reinstall of an app.

Thanks in advance.

Backup her contacts to a Gmail account, im sure she has one if you have access to the market,,,if she doesnt have the password to it, set up a new one, then add it to accounts&sync in the settings area , from there you can select the account and choose to sync it

purchase my backup pro from the market , if its purchased you can backup your phone without root

Yes you can do a nandroid backup but not with the stock recovery. You will need to place an update.zip file that has 2e recovery in it to access Clockwork Mod on the root of her internal SD card. I included a copy of the file that I use. You get into recovery by powering off the phone, holding both volume buttons down and the power button until the ATT screen pops up, then you release the power button. It will go into the stock recovery. You will need to tell it to reinstall packages (probably twice) and the second time it will come up with the 2e recovery. It will be green. There should be a section for backup and restore. This works without rooting - it's how I flash new ROMs if I flash back to stock.

Edit - I have never made a backup this way myself. I just booted into recovery to double check that there is a backup option, but I think after installing a ROM, it automatically installs a version of CWM that is compatible with the kernel, so I honestly cannot say for certain that the update.zip file that I included has the backup and restore option.
