Navigation App missing after Google Maps Update

I have uninstalled the update & refused to update Google Navigation since the update. Yesterday I decided to try it again. First, I did not lose my Navigation or Icon & it seems to work better than the previous update, but still wants ask to close when I hit the home button on my Note 2 & then go back to Navigation. That is ok, but not like before. The previous update (when things went bad) I would have to select the route again or start over. Navigation before September was absolutely perfect!!! Somehow, I'm hoping they can get back to that plateau .... we may have to steal iOS7's maps ;)

Anybody else notice any other changes in the latest update?

Cheers, Jon

One quick question, [new 2 smart phones so b gentle]

gtscriv,

Uh, both and yes...I think? Forgive me if I didn't catch the just of your question, but here goes...

GPS is used by both (Nav, Google Maps) to locate, track, etc. Turning on wifi allows google maps (and maybe Nav?) greater and quicker locking of signal by detecting a wifi network and narrowing down the field of search for the GPS to lock quicker. These two 'elements or former apps are now more like 'one app to rule them all'. Navigation is an element of the Google Maps app, rather than standing alone as a separate app. Wifi is also great for downloading map data to Goople Maps since you aren't using up your data on your plan (I'm assuming Verizon here), but once you start moving in your vehicle you are out of range for that wifi network and you are navigating via the GPS. Did I answer your question? I might have misunderstood but wanted to give it a go.

I used to have a Palm Pre+ and Pre2 with verizon. There was something that Verizon did or didn't do to often play havoc with the GPS, and the only locks I would get were tower locks or wifi. It was maddening. I still loved the OS, but Verizon didn't seem to understand there was a problem or just didn't care enough (not enough users).

gtscriv,
Are you asking if the Maps/Navigation feature will work with a Wi-Fi connection? Yes, it'll work with any kind of data connection - I believe you can even use it offline if you download the map data for where you're going ahead of time (I haven't done that myself with Google Maps but have with hiking apps).

BTW, if you think about it, it's not so silly for it to work on Wi-Fi - if you have a tablet with Wi-Fi and use the hotspot feature of the your phone, you end up with working solution.

On my S4 after updating to VRUDMI1 (latest software version 10/15/13) - I can no longer uninstall updates to return to the old version of Google Maps. This may never apply to S3 users - but I thought I'd share my misery...

Missing Navigation Icon: I was told, by my service company, that this feature is no longer available because the contract between Google and the company that provides the icon, no longer exist. Google Maps is NOT the same as Navigation. Google Maps is not easy to use as the other was. Is there anyone would can explain to me how to set "Avoid Tolls" and / or "Avoid Highway"? Also how do you exit Google Maps? Thank you.

If that is the case how come after I performed a factory setting the navigation icon is back and works and google maps is the earlier version, that works too.

I am trying to get Google Maps to verbally give me directions as the Navigation App did. How do I set that up

There are several ways, depending on how you select your destination. For example:

Tap the head & shoulders icon at the top right. This brings up saved places (My maps, from the Google Maps web app), and recently searched places. If what you want is there, tap it, then tap the car icon at the bottom right, then tap "Start navigation."

Or use the search bar, and select a recent search result, then tap the car icon and follow the same steps as above.

Or use the keyboard to enter your destination in the search bar, and follow the above steps

Or, from the main map page, tap the icon next to head & shoulders, that looks like a fork in the road. Choose from your history of listed destinations, or tap "Choose destination." Then follow the above steps.

Or, finally, use Google Now. Say "OK Google, " wait a second until you see "Speak Now," and say "Navigate to [address | place of business | landmark | etc.].

This sounds like BS, from a guy who has no clue but just wants to shut you up because he's tired of hearing people complain about it.

Not surprised. The latest firmware update is going to include the latest version of the Google apps, so there won't be an older version to go back to. The latest Maps update is showing improvement though.

Thanks,I am scrolling down half an hour in the apps to find it and now when I uninstall updates on maps, the little blue arrow appears again.

Right, so make sure you have that app Google Maps set for NOT to auto update, infact ensure you have the setting ticked on your phone for all apps not to be auto updated. This will mean you will have the old version of Google Maps but at least you have the old blue nav icon back which is what you wanted.
For future app updates just periodically check for updates in the play store and carefully pick the ones you want to update.

I had the same issue and went into google maps to search and see if I could use the navigation. The navigation software and turn by turn directions is still there, it is just imbedded in the Google Maps app. It is inconvenient, but really all that google did was get rid of the little blue arrow icon. The app has always been a part of google maps. I hope this helps.

jip, saw it too as I did a factory data reset last night and updated all my apps, think its more or less the same thing. My buddy has the s4 and his navigation app and my google maps looks the same. hope this helps

Both Google map and the navigator are same thing. Previously it was separately kept. Now, open the map and choose the road sign on the top at the end of search box right side..

exactly the same thing happened to me! i didn?t know what to do for quite a while, and after that I installed sygic - really cool droid navigation app and everything went back to normal...(i don?t know how or why..I?m just telling what helped me). but finally, I have to say that sygic is even better than google maps, so If I can give you a piece of advice: give it a try! and good luck ;)

$34 for the US maps. I think its going to have to be a lot better to attract many buyers, It's hard for developers to compete with free.
