Re: need a primer on wifi direct

I don't know about the 7s, but my wife and I both have a Galaxy S2 and we use wifi direct without any problems.

The downside to wifi direct is you have to disconnect both devices from your router so they can "build" a wireless network between each other. Because of this my wife and I were able to transfer files between phones while we were riding with family on vacation.

If you need help, but let me know and I will try to reproduce the issues with my phone and see if we can walk you through the problem.

Re: need a primer on wifi direct

Thx. There is no share option in file manager, gallery, etc, for WiFi direct.

Re: need a primer on wifi direct

I will have to try again tonight but I think u have to enable wifi direct, and connect to the other device then share via wifi from gallery, and file manager, and etc.

I will try it tonight when I have both devices available and let u know.

That's what I did. Connected the two nexus sevens. Went to gallery. No share option for WiFi

Bump

Anyone figure this out for the Nexus 7? I have wifi direct connected but no apps give me the "share via wifi direct" option.

Re: need a primer on wifi direct

dave1812 & bencostello,

My wife & I have only had our androids for a few weeks, but like chevrolet.racing252, we've had no problems transferring files, gallery pics, S memo's, etc. with Wi-Fi Direct. We didn't know what we were doing, but it seemed to work great. However, I did notice that there's certain instances when the—"share via wifi direct"—is not in the 'Share via' menu list. I remember telling my wife that: there's no share via wifi direct in my 'Share via' list ! :-\. . . (in fact, I think it was whilst I was trying to send from the gallery, if I'm not mistaken), but then I noticed a big Wi-Fi icon next to the 'Share via' icon, in the same toolbar. Upon clicking it, and acknowledging that you indeed want to send your (whatever) via Wi-Fi Direct, it quickly dispatches it, and...BAM ! ...it's in the other Wi-Fi Direct enabled device.

Of course, you have to toggle the other Wi-Fi Direct enabled device to 'On', first.

Then, after your (whatever) is sent, a notification chimes and a notice about your Wi-Fi Direct transfer appears in the Notifications drop-down list.

Don't know if any of that may help you, but hopefully it, or someone else's advice will. You can also watch tutorial video's @ the Samsung and/or AT&T sites.

Re: need a primer on wifi direct

Thx. I'll set it up again and look for a WiFi share icon although I thought I looked all over before. Will report back later.

Re: need a primer on wifi direct

still can't it to work. the two n7's are connected. i go to gallery. select photo. long press. get menu item at top of screen for direct connect. tap it. nothing happens. done this over and over and over.

( i loaded wifi direct app as u mentioned)

EDIT: hold the presses. sigh. seems that nothing is happening (I expected 1) to need to confirm transfer on receiving end, and 2) the item would go from gallery to gallery). good grief. all the stuff I sent has been going to their Download directory. Not what I expected.

Re: need a primer on wifi direct

Anything small will transfer so fast you will rarely even see it till you check with a file manager.

Re: need a primer on wifi direct

yeah, apparently so! I had no idea the receiving end wouldn't need to confirm all transfers. it all happens in the background.

Re: need a primer on wifi direct

Thats why free wifi hotspots are dangerous because everyone on the network has that kind of access to each others systems.

Re: need a primer on wifi direct

@zedora Thank You! That app worked perfectly! and @dave1812dave thanks for starting this thread, exactly what I needed.
@zedora on a wifi hotspot, as long as I am not using a wifi explorer type app, are any of my files viewable over the network? I have never seen this on android, though I don't doubt it is possible.
thanks again!
