Ok here is where my confusion starts. I was looking into rooting ad rom-ing my fascinate (no problem right) which is currently ED05 from an OTA and not rooted, and most stickies in the forums i was researching use odin. Last time i rooted, which was a while ago, i used ADB methods. This time i want to root and get some gingerbread action seen on this phone.

i) Well my main goal was to root my ED05 froyo and get a backup made with clockwork, then flash a gingerbread rom from clockwork recovery. How is odin getting me there? I mean at what stage would it enter in the process?

ii) So are there two main methods to rom, use odin or use CWM (which i assume is clockwork recovery)?

iii) With Odin do i first need root before i attempt to install a new rom? Or do i simply use Odin to move from my stock froyo to a rom- like vanilla GB or powerwash GB?

iv) omit 4 i think i understand for now

v) Instead do i first root with other methods as stickied in these forums, then use Odin to flash the clockwork red, and install roms from there? Are there other methods to get the appropriate clockwork?

vi) Once in a gingerbread rom could i flash back to a rooted froyo, if i had a recovery image made from the clockwork recovery? Of is this such a task left to Odin and i use it to move from rom to stock if needed?

I know i am all over the place.:-\:p;):mad::confused::-$ i have read too much all day and gotten no where to my goal.
Please, anyone who can answer any one of my questions much appreciated, because i don't expect any one person to answer all that would be too awesome.

Odin does not root per se. Odin is used to very easily install an image to your phone. That could be a new rom, kernel, recovery (CWM) or all. Custom roms all come rooted, at least I don't recall one that did not.

1) Personally I've had mixed results with nandroid restores. Always seems to be some issue. You can easily use Odin to re-install the stock rom. You do have to backup your data however as it will likely be erased.

2) Most roms come in either a .tar version which needs Odin to install or .zip with uses CWM. Same result, just a different method of installation.

3) Odin writes the new rom regardless of current root status.

5) CWM would be installed by Odin usually after your Rom. Check your rom instructions.

6) Odin is a very easy way to go back to stock. There is a sticky with all the links, etc.

Just backup your data first and foremost. Titanium and My Backup Pro are both good options. Going to GB from Froyo will wipe your data. Also a very good idea to copy your SD Card contents to your PC as a precaution.

Makes sense why I see Odin more than flash through CWM.

One last question: can I usually just Odin from one rom to another or is it best to go back to a stock recovery each time then flash my next rom ?

Because of the way Odin works you can usually go from rom to rom. Be careful if you are switching between voodoo and stock file system. CWM can be more difficult. Each rom has instructions, be sure to read and understand before proceeding.

So ive been getting more adventurous with my phone these past few days... soft bricked when odining, then computer crashed and thought i fully bricked... now im up and tested out two roms. I want to try a different kernel with PWGB. I have a nandroid backup of my powerwash. If i flash a voodoo kernal that is compatible with eh09 based roms can i use CWM to nandroid back to the original kernal? Just curious, cause i wouldn't want to have to odin back PWGB if i didnt have to- mostly cause of computer crashing issues.

Ok thanks Landshark finally got through ingesting and digesting the info in your four links. I know ive read all those before but appearently not well enough to know that I cannot nandroid back my origional kernel. ....now to find a file for that origional kernel...
