I'm completely clueless how to get my nexus 4 to connect to my ipad mini as a hot spot.

I enable all the right stuff on my nexus 4, but the wifi only ipad mini never recognizes the device when searching for compatible blutooth devices. Is there something I'm missing?

Sometimes you have to put a code for bluetooth devices to sync. 0000 or 1111 might work. I tether Internet from my N4 to my N7 over bluetooth no problem. It's possible that IOS and Android don't play nice.

Yes, why would you use bluetooth to connect to your wifi "hotshot"?

You want to go into the General -> Wi-FI settings in iOS and your N4's ssid should be listed there (if you have it on)

i thought it used less battery power for both devices. the speeds are slower when you tether or share internet by bluetooth, but i kind of regarded that as a good thing because then you don't burn through as much of your wireless plan's data allotment. it is still fast enough to stream video.

technically i don't think it is connecting to a wifi hotspot because you don't have to have wifi hotspot toggled on your N4, nor do you need to have wifi enabled on your N7, but rather sharing internet by bluetooth between devices.

No, I use my Nexus 4 for wifi tethering to my iPad 4 so it works really well.

I suspect it's probably an issue using bluetooth between iOS and Android as well. OP, just set up the N4's hotspot and use your iPad's wifi and you'll be fine.
