Need help: rooted, custom ROMs = spontaneous reboots

I've had my EVO since release day and never had any problems with it. Yesterday I decided to root it so I could try some custom ROMs. Ever since, my phone reboots about every 5-20 minutes. I have tried 3 different ROMs: VaelPak v2 BFS8, VirusROM BFS9, and Fresh (don't remember which one) and I get this problem with all of them? I made sure to wipe data, cache and Dalvik before installing any ROM. This leads me to believe that maybe the rooting is causing the problem.

I used a method that included unrevoked, which I've since learned may not be the best way. But it wasn't a one-click process. In fact it seemed quite involved. I'd post a link to the instructions I followed, but XDA seems down right now. Does anyon have any suggestions? My phone is almost unusable right now because it reboots so often (even when sitting idle).

Boot into recovery, and look at your hboot #. If its .76 then that's good. If its .79 or anything else then you have to flash the .76 h boot. I'll give you instructions once you check.

I had read that the CyanogenMod was fussy about which version of hboot was installed, but I was unaware that all mods had the same requirement. Can someone explain a bit more about how all of that works?

Mine reads 0.93.0000

This is exactly what I have using unrevoked to root..... I couldn't flash CM6 and I was recommended to use Simpleroot to get to the .76 but I was able to Flash Baked Snack 1.7 and so far I like it and have not gone the simpleroot method...

I don't fully understand it all but I am running a custom rom and theme so that works

Yah, I'm lost. I never even tried that ROM (CM6). All I know is my phone is now basically unusable and I have no idea why it won't stop rebooting. I've been trying to research how to get back to the .76 bootloader, but so far I haven't had any luck. It doesn't help that a lot of what Google returns leads to XDA and it's down.

I'm really not at all sure that getting back to version .76 is really going to help you. I thought that only certain ROMs had that requirement. (CM6 being the most famous.) I'm pretty sure that other ROMs will run happily along side much more recent HBoot versions.

But, I'm just a newb, so wait for an expert to weigh in.

I tried to get the file that someone had posted on XDA but the site is down. Basically it's a drag and drop of the file onto the SD, you then go into recovery and flash the zip. boot back into bootloader and let it install image. once that is done reboot and it should go back to last recovery or HTC sense again. once done remove image or every time you go into boot loader it will want to install again.

I have the file on my computer but no way to host it. If someone has a way for me to host it I can put it up. Also, what I have learned so far about the kernels and roms is that some are specifically written for certain roms and it is usually stated in the thread op. What I just learned is you can flash multiple kernels ontop of each other. Just make sure to backup first.

You can email it to the poor guy haha.

I can't really help you until xda is back up, sorry.

This is why I recommend AGAINST unrevoked, and I always advocate simple root or old fashion root methods that include the eng bootloader (.76).

Oh and not all kernels and roms can be mixed, and I wouldn't bother with anything else until you can get the .76 boot, or get ahold of a rom that doesn't need it.

Lol, its 184mb, it includes all the radios too. I can extract the hboot but it doesnt load for some reason when you do it that way.

OK. Now that XDA is back up... here is the root process I followed:

[GUIDE] How to root Android 2.2 on the EVO 4G - xda-developers

As you can see it's far from the one-click unrevoked root process I see people mention, but it does utilize unrevoked.

I continued trying ROM's and kernels, but they all eventually start rebooting. even if my phone is just sitting idle, I would notice it reboot. Out of frustration, I finally decided to flash it with the 2.2 RUU. Now, my phone seems normal again. I haven't seen a reboot since I did it this morning and that's far longer than any of the other ROMs I tried lasted.

From what i read it isn't possible to unroot unrevoked forever, but when I try to run SetCPU, it tells me it doesn't have root access and there is no superuser app on my phone. However, hboot still shows S-OFF which I understand to mean it is till rooted. Not sure what to make of those two things.

Finally, how should I proceed now? I'm just trying to get a "normal" root that will run custom ROM's withuout rebooting.

Find the superuser app on xda itself from the developer. Do not use the one from themarket as all your rooted programs will not recognize it since its an older version. The newest apk is listed in the thread, just download and install. That should fix, also install busy box from the market and root explorer( costs like a dollar but worth it.) Btw, the SU file is a zip and needs to be flashed so it can drop a file into system/bin
