I recommend CWM by team hydro. It's the newest version for the optimus S. But the xionia version is tried and true. There is a automated installer available for either one. Click the thanks button for all these devs hard work;)

Ok, you guys are awesome, custom recovery has been installed and I believe working properly, as it rebooted after if ran.

whats next, anything else I need to do?

Well you could decide on a custom Rom. Make sure It's one for zvh and not zvd. Don't use Rom manager whatever you do.. I recommend HydroRom but to each his own.

You need to follow the instructions in the thread where you downloaded the Rom itself. Try accessing your recovery first by turning off your phone. Then hold down power button +vol down +home button and your recovery will come up. MAKE A BACK UP FIRST. Then follow directions for flashing the HydroRom:D

Would Love to, I downloaded it from this forum, there are no instructions with it

Ok. Assuming you made a backup and all is well with recovery-
Clear all data including cache and dalvik- cache. Then apply the Rom. But user beware if you goof up It's on you...... they posted their instructions somewhere within the thread if you're reluctant:D

ok, I have cleared the data and the cache, but when I boot into recovery mode, this is all I get:

reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

the option to apply the ROM is not there, just these 4 options, did I screw something up?

Well not too bad or anything. You still have original recovery (stock) and it won't recognize the new Rom n stuff. When you reboot you will have to set up your gmail account. But you NEED to get that recovery changed.... and make a back up in case something goes astray

I did have to enter my gmail account stuff again, and reset everything, but then when I boot back into recovery, thats what I get

I would try one of the installers. Look up ez installer. And install xionia. You need to root again also I'm sure due to the factory reset. Root first then recovery. Then HydroRom

Not to be pedantic either, but the stickies could use definitely use some attention. They are exceptionally fragmented and confusing for new folks at this point in terms of how to root and what's what. The web of estranged links is quite puzzling. Now, I'll be the first to e-smack somebody for using ROM Manager, but if they genuinely want to learn now, it has become much more difficult than it was before the ZVH fiasco.

I suggest that someone with the necessary privileges modify/consolidate the stickies so that it is more direct and allows noobs to determine what they have quickly, and presents them with the appropriate action options. Perhaps even a quick explanation of what a radio or baseband is, that custom recoveries do not mess with it, and how we have 2 working versions in play for this device? I hereby volunteer to help.

Pretend you are coming to this device section for the first time with your recently purchased ZVH device. Play dumb and try to figure out how to own that thing in your hand using this site. Good luck!

And now that Drew has graciously posted a new custom recovery option, someone who knows the difference should explain to those who don't what the difference is and make a recommendation or present the options to them. If all of the answers about a custom recovery or ROM are not apparent in the first 2-3 posts, then that thread is not maintained. I don't care if you just uploaded a new version 2 hours ago; if people can't figure out why they should/shouldn't use it, it is just a point of confusion.

Further, how the hell is it that we have a couple of automated WIndows tools to root a ZVH device, yet no manual way to root it using Linux?? Isn't this like telling a Mayan or an Egyptian that there is no sun, then handing him a digital watch and a bottle of Coppertone to further his understanding of the universe?

when you get the terminal window, just type "A" (no quotes). You'll get a custom recovery. You'll have like 10 options in recovery if you have a custom recovery.
