I need to take my phone into Sprint and thought I had this figured out, but apparently not. Ran RUU but I am still rooted. Was going to try to run s-on through recovery, but when I choose recovery I get an icon with a phone with a red triangle/exclamation point.

Phone was previously rooted using unrevoked, flashed Fresh onto it. Ran RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe to try to bring it back to stock.

I've been on google for an hour trying to figure this out on my own and decided to seek help before i brick the phone. My main priority is changing s-off to s-on; fixing recovery doesn't seem like as big of a deal and if anything just reinforces the fact that i need a replacement.

thanks

When you ran the RUU you removed the custom recovery (ClockworkMod or Amon_RA), but it does not turn the signature verification back on (S-ON).

What you need to do is flash a custom recovery. Go to the link in my signature for Amon_RA, download the PC36IMG.zip file and copy it to the root of your SD card. Then, with the phone off, go to fast boot with the Power + Vol Down method. When it asks if you want to update, select "Yes." This will flash the Amon_RA recovery to the phone. After it flashes you should be able to select "Recovery" and then flash the Unrevoked S-ON zip file (assuming you downloaded it and it is on your SD card).

Then you can run the RUU again and you will be completely stock with the S-ON correctly configured.

Thank you, this is exactly the info I needed.

@illwood

Ok, so i tried running PC36IMG.zip from the bootloader and it did not work. I tried installing rom manager to attempt that way and I could not run the app. It says I'm not rooted? I don't get it, because I'm looking at the bootloader screen right now and it clearly says:

SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-2.10.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16AB
RADIO-1.39.00.04.26

@dumpedduce

I looked at your link, but the link to the RUU in zip format is a dead link. Also, not sure how this would help as I already ran the RUU and am still (at least according to the bootloader) S-OFF even though ROM Manager tells me it can't run because I'm not rooted.

What happened when you tried to flash it from the bootloader?

Rom Manager won't work because when you did the RUU, you installed a non-rooted stock ROM. There are two parts to rooting.

1. Rooted ROM - this allows you to delete the stock "bloatware" apps and run programs that require root access like Titanium Backup, Bloat Freezer, Wireless Tether. . .

2. Rooted HBoot - This changes the S-ON and S-OFF switch. This allows you to flash custom ROMs and the like.

They are separate in their functions.

It did the same thing the bootloader always does where it quickly scrolls through and looks for the pcdiag and the pc36img and then goes back to the regular bootloader screen.

I think you are very close, just missing a step. Just to verify, you have the PC36IMG.zip file from the Amon_RA recovery in the root of your SD card? In case you were unsure, the root folder of a drive is the base of the drive with no folders, so if you were to open the SD card in windows explorer, the P36IMG.zip would be visible without having to navigate to any other folders. Also, now would be a good time to make sure you have the Unrevoked S-ON zip file on your SD card as well. Here are the steps as I see them.

1. Power phone off
2. Press and hold Power + Vol Down to get to fastboot
3. Let the phone scan the PC36IMG.zip file. When it asks if you want to update using that file press Vol Up to confirm (you may need to press Power or Vol Up to verify).
4. Now the Amon_RA recovery should be loaded, power off the phone.
5. Press and hold Power + Vol Down to get to fastboot
6. Let it scan the PC36IMG.zip file but answer "No" (Vol Down) to the update.
7. Answer "No" (Vol Down) to reboot.
8. Navigate to "Recovery"
9. Now you should be in the recovery and can flash the S-ON zip file.

Once this is done, you should be able to re-run the RUU and be completely back to stock.

FYI, I think maybe in fastboot, you may have selected no to the update with Vol Down as a natural reaction when wanting to go to recovery.

Yes, the PC36IMG.zip file from the Amon_RA recovery was located in the root of the sd card. Fastboot does the scan, but never prompts to install anything.

At this point, I wonder if the easiest thing for you would be to re-root using Unrevoked, flash the ClockworkMod Recovery from Rom Manager. Then you could flash the S-ON zip and run the RUU.

I'm trying that now, we'll see how it goes. I assume you mean install unrevoked 3; not unrevoked forever, correct?

Thanks for all your help

I think I'm in good shape now thanks to you illwood. I ran unrevoked3, then updated clockwork recovery. Ran RUU successfully. Phone is still kind of FUBAR (stuck in reboot loop now, it will boot up android to the screen lock screen but reboots after about 15 secs), but at least I can take it into sprint with a sprint rom and with S-ON back in place. The rebooting has been like that since I bought it last week (craigslist'd) which is why I need to take it into sprint to try to swap it out. Just glad I found a good deal on a sprint evo with a clean esn, even though it has been a hassle.

Thanks!!

I'm glad to hear you got to where you need to be.

I'm assuming that you wanted to return the phone to stock to bring it to Sprint to get repaired or replaced under the TEP.

I don't know what problem you were having, but IIRC one of the first things that is tried at a Sprint store is to re-flash the stock ROM. If you want to try it yourself if you wanted. I can look it up if you are interested.

Correct, repaired or replaced under tep.

The problem was random rebooting and reboot loops. As for re-flashing a stock rom that's what I just did... twice. Isn't that what the RUU does?

Yup, that is what it does. I would say that there probably isn't much more you can do, so you should be set to have it repaired or replaced (likely replaced).

I had to have my 1st EVO replaced because of a reboot loop that occured whenever I used a higher amount of data over 3G (i.e. Navigation, Pandora . . )
