Need technical opinion G5 vs. V10

Ok, so I was leaning toward the G5 until I found out that the apps could not be stored on the micro SD card. My Galaxy S5 space is full a lot of the time because of apps that can't be stored on the SD card. I really didn't want a phone as large as the V10, but I might end up going that direction. I'm not considering any other phones because removable battery and sd storage are dealbreakers for me.

So my questions are...

1. Is the storage of apps on the SD card something that can be solved by LG realizing it was an unpopular decision and changed with a software update? (like they did with the app drawer situation)

2. If #1 were feasible, would LG, in your opinion, be likely to change that option?

3. Is the storage of apps on the SD card something that can be changed with rooting the phone? (I really don't want to do anything other than perhaps put a different launcher on there, but I'd like to know if the app storage location change is possible as an option).

Thanks for any help.

#1 is possible. Samsung did it by making an implementation that mimics their Lollipop implementation.
#2 is unlikely. Most users don't care and this isn't a priority. They sabotaged adoptable storage, so this seems intentionally to be the way they want it.
#3 Technically yes, but expect things to be broken in some cases.

Hi there,

Hope this helps a bit.

1) Yup, but I wouldn't say they'd consider it an 'unpopular decision' since they'd probably have more issues from people misunderstanding what adoptable storage was and how it worked, but that's a discussion for another thread. But to your question, yes, it's doable with a software update should they choose to go that route.
2) Nope. Like I said, adoptable storage still hasn't proven worthy.
3) Yes. If you root your phone, there are ways to make the phone believe your SD card is an extension of your internal memory. But it's not without it's flaws, like SD cards not being the most reliable form of storage, the fastest, and should the SD card be removed, it may wreak havoc in your device with missing apps and files.

I thought I'd responded to this yesterday, but I guess I hadn't. Those were the answers I was looking for, but definitely not the ones I wanted to hear. I've been stuck in this storage situation for awhile, and I don't want to be in the same boat a year or so after buying a new phone. I have nearly 30gb of music, videos, and pictures on my phone, and all of it fits nicely in my sd storage (all but 200mb). Apps and the pre-loaded software/OS take up the rest.

Anyway, thanks for the information and quick replies. It's very helpful.

S7/S7 Edge do move full apps to SD card even though they don't use Adoptable Storage (Sammy did some tweaking to their pre-Lollipop code for this). I read somewhere that the G5 doesn't even let you move apps to SD card, not even with Lollipop's implementation, but I haven't used one so I can't confirm.

I seem to remember someone saying you could enable adoptable storage on the G5 through adb. I couldnt find an article for it, but presumably you do something similar to this article about the S7:

Here's how to configure adoptable storage on your S7 / S7 Edge - Android - MoDaCo

Sounds scary.

Why would you need to move apps onto SD though? As long as you store media on the SD, 32GB is plenty of room for all the apps you could want. If you use adoptable storage and the SD corrupts, you are in big trouble.

As far as I know, there's no option to enable it. And the biggest argument for moving apps (or having bigger internal storage options) is that some games, etc. can be absolutely huge. I'm really not a fan of the 32 GB devices being the only option with SD to support it. I'd much rather have a 64 or 128 GB device (internal) with no SD card slot.

Yup, like Assassin Droid says, some games are now big enough to take up the 32GB (which you're already down like 7 or 8 Gigs after the OS and stuff is loaded) quite quickly.

Do you mean you read somewhere that the S5 doesn't let you move apps to SD card? If that's what you meant, then that's only partially correct. I have a Galaxy S5. I can move some apps to my SD card, but not all of them. Other than the pre-installed apps, I'm not sure what the determining factor is for the phone allowing me to move some but not others.

It's up to the dev on each app to code (basically toggle) support for it.

I don't even have any monstrous apps on my phone (the largest being 363mb), but I'm constantly at capacity with my current 16gb internal storage (and again, that's even being able to put some apps on my SD card). A phone with 32gb internal storage is probably good enough right now for my current needs, but I typically keep phones for 2 years. I'd strongly suspect I'd be in the same capacity situation down the road.

The G5 does prompt to store App data on SD for some of the apps which may help alleviate some of the space issues. It's not a full app solution unfortunately for your needs. I usually only keep a couple of games loaded at any time anyway since most games have cloud based saves I can pick up where I left off if I get back into a title.

Nope, I meant the G5. As in LG's newest, which was a surprise. I was expecting it to at least be able to move partial app files to SD cards like previous phones. On the S5 (and all versions, really), it's up to each dev to decide if they'll allow SD card move or not, and on Lollipoop (not sure if KitKat too) all app's main files needed to reside in internal memory, so you could only move a portion of the app.

So.. Get a 64 gig v10 and a 200 gig SD card and you'll be golden..

I set Spotify to store downloaded songs to the SD card, that takes care of my main internal storage burden
