Hoping this is an ok place within the forum to post this question -- I ran a search but couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

I have been a long time iPhone user, and recently switched to the Note 4 and couldn't be happier. One thing I do miss, though, is iMessage; basically everyone I talk to on a regular basis has an iPhone.

If I am messaging someone using Google hangout to their Google account, is this using up part of my text message / SMS allowance? Or is it effectively skirting around it the way iMessage does?

Thanks!

If you do not use Hangouts for text message it will not count towards your SMS allowance. If you use Hangouts as your text messaging app, it will.

Unless the box you're composing the message in says that it's sending an SMS or to a phone number, you're using Hangouts over your data plan.

On my Moto X (saw the post in the unanswered at the top and figured I'd read), the compose box has a little SMS label next to it and in the compose box it says "Send SMS to (xxx)xxx-xxxx from my carrier number" if I'm sending an SMS. It says "Send Hangouts Message" and has the green Hangouts "bubble" to the left of the compose window when you're sending a Hangouts message.
