You guys think the new aspect ratio 18.5:9 Samsung is using for the S8/N8 are here to stay, or will they ever go back to or offer a model with the old ratio ?

I wasn't crazy about the new ratio messing around with the S8 demo, but not sure how much it would grow on me if I owned a N8 or if it would continue to aggravate me. Seems like with the success of the S8 and likely N8, SS is IMO probably would be sticking with the 18.5:9 ratio for future phones.

If that's the case I and am just one of those picky people who couldn't come to like the new ratio, there's other options out there for now. I was curious if this new ratio is what all future phones form other companies will end up going with, or if we'll always have some decent phones in the 16:9. Curious to get some of your thoughts if you think other companies will follow with the 18.5:9 or stick with 16:9.

Remember when the first 16:9 televisions came out? Now think about using a 4:3 TV.
The only disadvantage of the new ratio is the videos. If the screen is 6.3", you are still getting a big screen to watch videos.
The extra tall screen benefits all other aspects of the phone to see more with less scrolling.
I don't think they are changing back. Not sure why they didn't just go with 18:9 though.

They probably design the phone based on how far the screen factory can push the limits of OLED technology with the planned size for the chassis, not with a particular aspect ratio in mind. Having more screen than you need is not considered a downside. Plus it gives a little extra for the curved edge of the display without losing 18.9 for the front.

The first movie screens were a 4:3 aspect ratio, and when television came along it copied that standard. Then the movie business started losing money to TV and changed the screen size to 16:9 figuring it would be too hard for TVs to catch up. Well it took a few decades, but display technology advanced enough to have any aspect ratio imaginable now. We just stick to 16:9 to view movies and other media, but there is really no hard limit for phone or display makers to have to stick to.

I can never really tell with Samsung. Last year I got a Samsung Tab 10.1, it it has a 4:3 aspect ratio, despite that all of their phones were a standard 16:9. I could see Samsung deciding at some point to go back to 16:9 for the phones, but I don't think that's the most likely scenario.

I'm not the biggest fan of the new ratio; it doesn't bother me too much, but it's not ideal. It's great for web surfing and reading eBooks...not so good for videos. I find myself cropping videos to 18.5:9 as much as possible so as to fill the whole screen.

Less expensive models may stick to 16/9. I hope iPhone goes to 16/9. As long as the TV shows and tv sports are produced in 16/9 I will always prefer 16/9. This is especially true now that all the American providers are throttling to 720p. What good is a 4k 2/1 display when you can't watch much of anything at that resolution nor aspect?

Thing is, movies aren't filmed at or presented at 16:9 in theaters, not sure the exact ratio but they've gone wider yet. Some movies actually fit the new 18:9 screens better because they have less wasted black space above and below the film.

The iPhone will not be 16x9, that's a given.

The change to 18:9 is more about ergonomics for the users rather than content but there is content in that ratio.

2:1 was created as a middle ground between 1.78:1 (16x9) and 2.35:1, which is what most movies are filmed in.

The transition from 4:3 to 16:9 took years, it didn't happen overnight. Having every television studio, every local TV station, etc switch to new cameras is very expensive and takes time. Will TV ever switch to 2:1? Who knows. But movies that are in 2.35:1 are better served on a 2:1 display than a 16:9.

Some of Netflix's biggest shows are filmed in 2:1.

There's plenty of information out there about 2:1. A simple Bing search will provide plenty.

Here's an article on 2:1 that's pretty good and informing about the shift.

I never watch movies on the phone. I watch sports and tv shows. Movies look better on big screen tv. There are a few Netflix shows filed in 2/1 but the vast majority of things I watch are in 16/9. Often even movies I watch on xfinity stream on demand are converted to 16/9 to fit hd tv screens. Nobody likes black bars on their big screen tvs.

Yeah, this is here to stay. And 2 years from now, you won't hear a peep of protest.
You will if I am alive and my tv and cable at home and virtually every tv show is still 16/9 People who don't watch shows on their phone don't complain

If tv's were going to be predominantly 2/1 in 2 years they would have to be out already. No such change is occuring. Gamers don't care. You don't care. People watching tv on their phones WILL care and won't shut up about. it.

Movies are better on TV but shows and sports aren't? Lol. So you'd pick watching football on a 6" phone over a 120" projector? Give me a break.

You should never be happy about watching a movie that's converted to 16x9 . The director filmed the movie in a specific aspect ratio for a reason. Converting that is trash.

Ya. Sports are better on tv but I like to watch them live - don't you? I'm not always at home when Patriots or Redsox play. Watching a 2 hour movie on demand on the phone when I can watch it later on tv makes no sense. Got it? Now I'm stuck waiting for something I can watch a formerly 1 hour tv show in 45 minutes on Netflix. You don't do it so you don't get it.

How do you know what I do?

What does watching a show on Netflix have to do with anything? It can be watched on any device and I've used everything to watch them depending on situation.

I only watch things on my phone when I have no other choice. I would never pick to sit at home and watch something on my phone instead of my 4k TV or projector.

OK so you're stuck at the mall and the game is on but you what - wait to watch replays at home? Or a buddy is going to be an hour late you can cruise the Internet or post here but often I watch an episode of some show I like on Netflix. Maybe Frazier or Revolution. Not a 2 and half hour movie. Yes I like watching shows on my phone because it is always with me. Bottom line is everything I watch on my phone is 16/9. In 2 years it will still be 16/9.

You I could look at a smaller picture with black bars on each side or stretch it or crop it on 2/1 or just watch in 16/9 filling the screen.

The only thing I'm waiting for is for You Tube to adjust to it. That will happen 5 minutes after the iPhone announcement.
