new captcha usage for authenticating accounts

I noticed this morning that I gota notification saying something along the lines of authentication error with ****************@gmail.com. then when I selected the notification I had to enter three different captcha visual text codes. Is this possibly a way to confirm accounts to devices for the new market.android.com? Or does anyone have any other suggestions. I've never had to enter a captcha on my device before especially for my native email account login.

it's not the new market, it's happened to me before the market was released.
I read somewhere that you'll see that if someone/something tries unsuccessfully to login to your Google Account 3 times. the next time you try to access you account you see that screen
not sure if that's true but that's what I heard.

I had the same thing happen a few weeks ago (before the new market), and thought it was very strange. Has not happened since though.
