New droid 2.1 update rolling out!

Since there is such a huge difference in file size, has anyone entertained the idea that this is probably just a full system image of the 2.1 update?

That's the conclusion the guys at droidforum came up with. I'm guessing this is a non issue.

just installed the update manually.....seems a lil snappier (if snappier is a word)....only thing i've noticed so far...once i explore a lil more i will report back with more findings

this update was probably not a myth... but rather some phones fail to receive "patch" updates which the normal update was. What I mean by that is the normal update didn't include a complete set of files for the system partition. Some phones, due to obscure bugs or for whatever reason, fail to update. Verizon then sends out these "phantom" updates, but only to a certain few, that contains a complete full system image... My guess is this is what this is... And if you updated fine you should not worry cause you will not receive anything.

This update was definitely NOT 2.2 or any minor update in version at all. My guess again is that this is one of the things that spreads annoyingly. I believe we can put this to rest.

the whole thing stating that the new update will block rooting is a false rumor. somebody has already attempted rooting and was successful.

plus they would not be able to block RSD lite (which is the current way to root from 2.1) since that is the same program they use. i think it is understandable to get panicked, hell last night after i updated i was a little annoyed thinking that i was not going to be able to root but research is a good little skill haha

so guys.... root away cuz i know i am going to probably tomorrow once i get some time.

Just did the "new" manual update for the hell of it. No changes, Kernal# and Build# all the same.

I assume this is the same manual update process that we used when we updated to 2.1 a month or 2 ago?

For the people that already downloaded the new OTA. How do you root it after? Ive only rooted my phone through DroidMod and would like to root it myself this time to flash my own roms. Unless I can still do that with DroidMod? Anyways I read that when you get the OTA update you have to revert back to 2.0.1 in order to gain root access (At least every where I looked so far tells me that) I want to keep my 2.1 and just gain root access from there so I can do things like overclock, save apps to sd card, etc. I havent found any good walk throughs other than the reverting back to 2.01 which I just dont want to do. Any help would be sweet! I know theirs lots of forums about rooting out there but I just got the new 2.1...the one today...and Was curious where to go from this point! Thanks guys!

please explain "rooting"

This might be a stupid question to some of ya'll, but can someone please tell me what "root" and "rooting" is and why its good or bad???? Please!!

If you go to the Rooting/Mod section of this forum it will explain everything.

Basically, it allows you to customize your phone even more than you already can with the stock OS.
