New EU directive for charging.

Well, that's not very compatible with reactionary curmudgeonlyness based on ignorance!
Can't say I've ever heard that word before in here (curmudgeon or variants of it). In fact, very surprised to read it, having only ever heard it before in one limited circle. Do I know you?

I think it's good. Should have happened (standardized around USB or lighting) long ago, in my opinion.
I would say if anything, USB should be the last choice for a universal standard. Traditional barrel style connections always last me the life of the device and then some. I'm replacing USB cables two or three times a year because they wear out.

I have more USB cables than I have devices to use them for. I'd also prefer a standard, rather than a proprietary barrel style connection that only works on a single device.

So @dangerousfen, I agree with this EU directive and welcome its implementation.

I think it will be a good thing. It is so much easier for me charging my iPad Air with the same cable I can use for my Android phones.

I haven't bought a USB cable in nearly a decade, I've only had a few cords fail in my life time. Now the charging port itself, I've had issues with those.

Now, wouldn't that be a hell of a coincidence!

I'm fine with it... but I wouldn't be fine with removing the charging/data ports on phones completely... which is where Apple wants to go. Wireless charging isn't ready for that yet, still too slow compared to wired charging. I personally don't wirelessly charge for that reason. And I'd like to keep the option to plug my phone into my pc for file transfers/software updates/headphones/Android Auto etc vs trying to mess around with Bluetooth or wifi.

Yes, you make a valid argument there.

I agree. I do use a wireless charger on my desk, but I prefer wired when I need it to charge faster. I also have no desire to get some charging pad for the car.

I also agree regarding file transfers. I don't have an SD card reader on my PC. It's something I use so rarely, that I wasn't going to sacrifice a PCIe slot to add an SD card reader and lose extra USB ports.

Considering wireless charging wastes electricity compared to wired I wonder what the environmental impact would be with over 100 million iPhones being forced to use wireless charging. It's probably minimal, but I still wonder.

I think it will be annoying during the transition period, and that could last a decade. For example, a (relatively) new Samsung phone and Watch recently came with only a Charging Cable that had Male USB-C on the block end of the cable. However, I have many old wall outlet blocks that have Female USB-A on them, for use for charging various Apple or Android (or even other pieces of electronics that are now almost a decade old, but still used today). I can't easily use those old blocks into the future for also the newer devices. I either have to start replacing blocks or cables, or get a bunch multi tool adapter pieces. Oh well I guess.

As far as I understand, the source end will not be affected. It only the device end that will require the USB-C connector.

The two recent Samsung devices I mentioned came with USB-C on source end of the cable, for at the charging wall block, not USB-A. For new Samsung phones and tablets, by default basically only getting a cable with USB-C on both ends (from what I understand).

Yes, I understand where your coming from, but I am certain that the EU directive only applies to the device.

Yes, I understood where you where coming from also with that. Sorry, my example wasn't exactly based on the new directive only but instead based also on the general changes recently, and the movement from the directive.
