Hello all - New owner of a Evo 4G as of today 12/15! :D Have not really had chance to use it yet. I was with AT&T previously since iPhone 1. Hate At&T and glad to be done with them. I'm new to Sprint and hopefully they will be better.

I was going to get a myTouch 4G with T-Mobile however by their own admission at the TMO store there will be no new towers in the area to improve service. A friend of mine has one and she does not even get 3G in the area. :( So to Sprint I went. Actually got a screaming deal at Radio Shack.

Any suggestions on what to do first? Do we get Froyo 2.2? or Gingerbread 2.3? The big question is does HTC (Sprint) actively update the Evo VS some other carriers. I have read where some carriers just kind of leave you in the lurch on some handsets. I really don't want that to happen with the Evo.

Thanks in Advance, of course i'll search and troll the message boards.

Happy Holidays!

My advice to you is that if you got this thing under contract I encourage you to wait on something new for Sprint..This phone is outdated and it gets laggy. The worse part is that if you use the phone a lot you will be very very very dissapointed at it's battery life. It stinks horribly.
The phone does get updates often which is good but trust me you will be dissappointed.

So your saying I should take it back? The consensus on this forum is that the EVO is awesome. I had an iPhone 4, 3GS etc. I understand what it's like to moderate battery consumption. I will follow tips on this board to maximize my Evo and save the battery.

However I can always purchase a spare battery or maybe there is a better battery than the stock battery. I have till January 15th if it sucks that bad then i'll return it. I have not heard of any new models to supersede the Evo and if there is one in the near future i'll address it then.

the EVO is awesome and it blows every other phone away IMO. my suggestion for you for the next few days is to READ READ READ these forums. READ FIRST - ask questions later.

enjoy your new EVO!

To the op - let me first say welcome.

I apologize for that first post. You have chosen one of Htc/Sprint best phones on the market today.
The Evo just like any other phone has its pros and cons. Reading is your best friend on this forum, you'll learn more about your phone capability as you go along.

Enjoy your new addiction... and welcome to Android Central. :)

First Welcome! I guess it will be up to you if this phone is for you or matches up to the iphone legacy. I have had mine since launch day & love it, The Evo dose have it's issues & bugs but they all do, I agree reading is your friend, if you have questions or issues the good news is some one has either asked for help on the issue or have had the same problem. As far as if you what system you are running at the home screen push menu>settings>about phone>software info>, look @ android version & that should tell you. 2.2= Froyo. as far as Gingerbread or 2.3 its still in the making & Im sure as soon as it comes out it will be all over the forums.

Ignore the troll he's just got a hard on for Evos.

Your phone should have come with 2.2 already. It will be getting 2.3 but it will be a while, it's not out in the wild yet. Sprint/HTC will be supporting this phone for the foreseeable future, it's Sprint's flagship phone. There will certainly be better phones announced at CES next month, but there is nothing out there right now that is a clear winner. The top of the Android pile is pretty crowded and there are several phones that are arguably the best - including Evo.

I planned on biting on the EVO but with CES so close I'll hold off and see what's coming down the pipeline.

The EVO is 6 months old so I'm going on the assumption there will something offered on sprint that will blow the doors...er numbers of the touch screen!

I also had an iPhone 4, and hated the reception issues and massive amount of dropped calls. I look forward to start using the Evo.

Thank you all :)

I have been so busy today that I have not had a chance to even use it. It was waiting on the port completion and I switched it off and back in the box. I hope to get to use it this evening. The good thing is I sold the iPhone 4 to some guy on Craigslist. It paid for my Evo.

I got mine a week ago and I LOVE THE PHONE.

It should have 2.2 already installed, but if you're tech savy I'd advise you root your phone and install a custom ROM and other things on it... After I did that my battery life has improved SO MUCH! I'm impressed with the phone and like I show it to everyone all the things it can do and people are like WOW by it ;) GOtta love owning the Ferrari of phones lol oh and Sprint DATA is awesomeeeee

Welcome to the Evo world.. I love mine, and there are a ton of accessories out there, and battery life is the number one issue for people. Read about battery calibration, tips for better battery performance, and give it some time to settle in. Make one change at a time and like others have said, if you are tech savvy, read all the hard work that others have done and documented to make this one of the best out there... open that bad boy up and have fun.

Familiarize yourself with the Android OS and understand that there are always those in the 10% who are unhappy with anything they buy. You can extend your stock battery to great levels by following many tips out there.

All forums have a-holes on them, and, I don't mean just unhappy people. Do your best to ignore them, because most people are friendly and helpful, but the a-holes can be ruinous. It's the ugly side of keyboard anonymity.

Let me tell you why I like the Evo, then I'll give you a heads up on the only two things that might be issues.

My work typically involves a visit to a client's home where I gather a bunch of data and documents and do 3-4 hours of work on my laptop while connected to the net, so, portability was a big factor for me. Here are the machines that my Evo ($130 monthly, unlimited) replaced .

1. AT&T Razr, $90+ monthly
2. AT&T air card, $89+ monthly
(Nothing unlimited, so my total AT&T bill was around $280 monthly.)
3. Garmin Navigator
4. Palm Pilot (calendar)
5. Scanner (produced pdf files from scanned documents).

These are five pieces of hardware that I no longer have to carry or pay for. They have all been replaced by my Evo. I have them on a shelf in my office, as mementos from a bygone era. They haven't been touched for months

A couple of tips.
1. Battery life: All smart phones, especially the powerful ones, like the EVO and iphone 4G, have battery life issues--it's inherent to the type. All of my friends have iphone 4G's, and all of them gripe about battery life. I do not have a battery life issue like my friends, because, unlike the iphone, which is a Steve Jobs proprietary architecture scheme, the Evo allows you to remove the battery, while in the iphone, the battery is fixed. So, since I typically have big power usage, I use a 3500 battery. I got 2 big batteries, a battery charger, and a nice new battery cover to accommodate the big battery, on ebay, for $29. Have been using them for 3 months and they work like a charm, and the phone fits better in my hand.
2. Charging port on phone: There are some issues with the charging port failing after a few months. I've had my phone since Aug. 5, and no problem yet. You might want to search the various forums for info on this. it seems that, so far, everyone who has had this problem has been getting replacement Evo's.

I hope that I have been of some help.

I changed Kool-Aid mix from Apple to Google

Thank you all for the support. This is one of the reasons I joined here as the support seems genuine and peeps seemed to really like Android and their respective handset, albeit ours is the best :)

I only got to take it out for a little while last night and I was blown away when watching Sprint TV. I hope that Friday morning and going forward I will be able to use it full time.

I got to admit I was a huge Apple Fan boy with regards to all things Apple iPhone. Not anymore... Steve J. in my opinion has dropped the ball when it comes to iOS and the handset. But that's another story. No more Apple Kool-Aid for now on. I have taken a sip of the new Kool-Aid it's all about Android and HTC I can't wait to get more. :D

Happy Holidays

What a helpful post... NOT. Wonder why other owners aren't experiencing your level of disappointment?

I've had mine since release weekend. When exactly should I expect it to "get laggy"? And this phone has better battery life than the iPhone 4 I returned to get the Evo, and on that phone you couldn't change the battery if it died.

Welcome to the Evo. This is the best phone on the market right now. You will most definitely not be disappointed although I will admit you have to be more diligent with your battery life with this phone than most. But that is not that big of a deal. Use your car charger when driving, have a wall charger at work and home. Plug it in whenever you can.

Go to the market and get Appbrain. This will allow you to keep a record of the apps you install on your phone and if you ever have to hard reset it will prompt you to redownload the apps you had on the phone before the reset.

NoLED in the market is pretty cool for notifications of emails, mms, calendar events and such as well.
