New EVO Battery Life Sticky: Please Contribute

How about just leaving the phone off when you charge it over night... If it's off after it's fully charged it wont be using any battery.. Or do what I did. Buy a battery wall mount charger. I'm getting close to 20 hours of medium- heavy use out of it. Hell I've been on my phone for 20 minutes straight after putting the battery back in from charging on the wall charger and it'll still be at 100%. I have live wallpapers up, twitter updating every 5 minutes, I use the web browser to go on facebook and other sites for at least a total of 2-3 hours per charge. I use the engadget app often, huffington post app i mean I can go on and on. I would say my use is definitely medium-heavy and like I said, using the new charger is giving me close to 20 hours. If nobody wants to go that route when why not just turn the phone off over night while it charges??

I get different results. I see no difference what so ever.

Granted, but you hear more people that have noticed a difference as opposed to *not* noticing a difference. Since I have moved on to a different method, this is a moot point for me, but I speak from my own experience in saying that it worked for me.

what is your "different method?"

Yesterday I decided to *not* calibrate the battery as this root mentions great battery life, so I took it off the charger @ 7 Wed. morning. Before, even when I completed the calibration, under normal usage, I was less than 20% by the time I went to bed. After this root, as of this morning, with my normal amount of usage yesterday, I'm @ 36%, and this is after I turned some of the features back on (wifi always on now, higher screen brightness setting, constantly on vibrate, haptic feedback on). Like I mentioned, I haven't charged it since yesterday a.m. I'm going to see how long it lasts today, and tomorrow, I'm going to turn on one of the features I really liked, the live wallpaper.

This wasn't a clean comparison. In addition to not calibrating and rooting, you also turned wifi on. You changed too many settings at once, so it's not really possible to know which led to your improved battery use.

I have my own opinion: your improved battery use was probably due to the activation of wifi, not due to either the rooting or the calibration change. When you have a decent wifi signal available, using wifi will significantly improve battery use, as it uses less power than 3G data. In my experience, leaving wifi off and using 3G for all data transmission, including background email, calendar, and weather syncing, gives me about 24 hours of battery. When I turn wifi on and change no other settings, I get about 36 hours.

I haven't read through this entire thread, so maybe someone has suggested this already:

Profiles Settings as a battery saving tool.

I have multiple profiles thatautomatically turn various radios on and off as likely to be needed. I start the day with my "Home" profile, which has WiFi enabled, but not GPS or BT. Once I get 50 yards or so from my house on my way to work, the Home profile drops (it's based on my WiFi SSID), and my default profile is enabled.

Default turns off WiFi, and activates BT. When BT comes on, and it connects with my car's BT, it turns on the car profile. This activates the GPS radio, (and turns up all the volume settings to max).

I get to work, and a time and location based profile turns off BT, WiFi and GPS. Since it's location based, if I go out at lunch time the phone will switch to either the default profile or my car profile (depending on whether I'm in my car or not).

Leave work at the end of the day, and the car profile comes on until I get back home, when the BT and GPS get turned off, and WiFi turned back on.

With this setup, rarely do I have a radio turned on that I'm not actually likely to use. Hasn't made a huge difference, but I'd estimate a 10 to 20% improvement. Since I was getting 12 to 15 hours before, this isn't trivial.

And, of course, in addition to battery saving settings there are a ton of other things controllable via profiles.

Per my other thread i got 11+ hours of pretty hard use and had 15% battery left with these settings -

1. 4G, WIFI, GPS, BT, Hotspot all set at OFF with widgets. turn ON only as needed.
2. UNCHECK "always on mobile data".
3. Brightness set to very low (underneath checkmark - extreme left). this is plenty bright for me.
4. No Live Wallpaper. not sure of this makes a difference but i have my own graphic anyway.
5. No Data intensive constant data hungry widgets/apps constantly running. i wiped News and Stocks and Sprint Zone. uncheck them for sync. i will get my data from the browser fresh as needed. i have no updating widgets other than 2 weather cities with the nice big beautiful HTC Clock/Weather default widget i keep with auto refresh at 1 hour. i have 2 GMail PUSH accounts that i set up and are always on.
6. Sign out of everything when done - GTalk, Qik, FB, etc. Everything! i don' use this stuff anyway. as noted before - let GTalk run in the background for PUSH Gmail but always sign out and uncheck auto sign you in.
7. Vibrate is ON for Calls and Texts. Vibrate is OFF for emails. all Haptic Feedback - Keyboard, Screen, etc. is OFF.
8. i DO NOT use a task killer or kill tasks with the Manage Applications Panel.

With these setting right here, I wasn't charged for 17 hours and was down to 89%, only did minimal chatting via Google Talk.

I did the batter calibration that was posted earlier in this thread and have had a significant increase in battery life since. So I'm a believer. Here are the steps for anyone who wants to try it:

To calibrate the battery...
With the phone in the on position.
Fully charge the battery with the phone on... (until the led turns green.)
Once the led turns green, unplug the charger until the led goes off.
After the led goes off, plug the charger back in. When the led turns green , power off the phone.
now.... with the phone fully powered off...
1. Unplug the charger.
2. Wait until led goes off.
3. Plug charger back in until the led turns green. When it turns green, unplug the charger again and go to step 1.
4. repeat steps 1 and 3, 10 times. This may take anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 mins per cycle. Typically only about 1 minute. though.

Wow. I thought my battery was pretty good already. I did this and its even better now.

Never saw the battery meter stuck at full while I was watching videos and surfing the net for a full hour.

Thanks!

Also need to calibrate the battery...
With the phone in the on position.
Fully charge the battery with the phone on... (until the led turns green.)
Once the led turns green, unplug the charger until the led goes off.
After the led goes off, plug the charger back in. When the led turns green , power off the phone.

...more steps...

I had an odd experience with the steps above this weekend. After powering off the phone, I couldn't power it back on again. I had to pop the back, remove the battery, and put it back in before the phone would power on.

A nice upside: after getting the phone back on and without completing the remaining steps of the calibration routine, I'm now up to 48 hours of uptime, and I haven't hit the 15% battery warning yet.

My EVO is updated, not rooted, unused radios are off.

Forgot my charger at the office on friday, its now monday and I am at 20%. 2 days 20 hours since unplugged.

Used mainly for calls and texts, some web browsing, pandora while doing lawn work.

Very happy with my EVO

Wow, thats pretty sick. I can get 2 days out of my phone too, but would mainly be a few texts and very little web use. Once Pandora is running or calls are made, it tanks fairly quickly for me.
from normal use, I would say I am continuously getting 24hrs give or take.

I just can't believe these times. On Sunday I took it off the charger, did some web and a couple of texts. In about 4 hours it was dead.

I just plugged mine in after last taking it off the charger Saturday morning. 62 hours, 10% battery left.

I've tried a number of these methods and nothing works. I tried the calibrating method and that didn't work either. I charged my phone to 100% and took it off immediately this morning at 8:40. I browsed a little bit and sent two texts and it's 9:07 am and it's at 92%. 27 minutes of use and I've lost 8%.

I am really frustrated with myself in being so worried about my battery. If I never would have read negative reviews before I got my Evo, I probably wouldn't be so worried about it all the time. After one month, I can say that I have established my usage patterns and have gotten a real indication as to what kind of battery life I should expect.

My routine starts at about 7:30am when I take the Evo off the charger. Like everyone else, my battery drops a few percent in the first 5 minutes, without even being used. I get into my truck at about 7:45 and plug the phone into my car charger, where it will top itself off on the way to work, about a 15 minute drive. Once it is at 100%, I remove it from the charger and will not connect it to power again until I go to bed (usually with at least 30% battery remaining at 12:00-1:00 am).

I use the phone regularly. Probably send 20-30 texts throughout the day, a few phone calls totaling maybe 30 minutes. Check twitter (twidroyd) about once per hour, browse the web occasionally (about 30 minutes throughout the day), possibly watch a video or two on youtube. This is usually done over WIFI (at work), and when over a 3G connection I use the data connection a bit less.

By the end of the day, when I am about ready to go to bed, I will purposely try to drain as much of the battery as possible. I will mess around on the web/youtube/etc. for a solid 2-3 hours sometimes (usually less, depends on how bored I get). When I finally go to bed, the battery will still be at least 30%. A few nights, I stayed out late until 2:30am and the battery was still going strong....

Obviously, I have stopped worrying about it so much these days (though it is still a habit to pick up my phone and look at my battery percentage every hour or so). I can EASILY get 16 hours out of this phone with battery to spare.... and with as much as I use the Evo, compared to my previous Blackberry Tour, I see the battery life as being excellent.. no complaints. However, I did a few tweaks when I got the Evo to conserve, like manual facebook refresh, using push gmail, getting rid of friend stream widgets etc.

For those of you getting horrible battery life still, I have to wonder if you may have a faulty battery?

My battery life is about 24-30 hours right now.

I had a strange incident when I first calibrated my battery. I did it two ways:
1) draining it until it shut off, then charging it fully while off
2) with phone on, I charged until 100%, turned off, unplugged, plugged back in until fully charged indication, repeat 2 - 3 times... you've heard it all before..

But after doing the second charging method, I turned on the phone, and it was only at 90%! This was after it previously said it was at 100% before I turned it off and calibrated. I let it charge back to 100%, and since, I've been having very long battery life. It takes my phone an hour just to drop to 97% in the morning, and I keep the data sync ON!

I've had my EVO for two weeks now. The first few days, my battery just flew (by this I mean that it went from 100% to 30% in a few hours). But I now get a ridiculously long time out of it--like, I get up at 7am and put it on the charger at 11pm ish with 40-50% left.

In fact, the battery is so much better that I have yet to use the two extra batteries ($9 shipped) that I bought on Ebay, from China--the ones that folks on some other threads love so much. So I can't even say if those batteries are a great deal or not. I have no use for them! :-)

I'm not sure how to explain the change (what deserves the most credit), but here's what the past two weeks have included:

I started with ATK, without GPS or Wifi turned on for the most part, and my on-phone activity was mostly downloading and playing with new apps and launchers. I uninstalled ATK on day 3 because the phone was acting buggy (lots of force closes and restarting itself) and continued to download and play with tons of apps and widgets. After having the phone for about 5 days and having it restart itself at least once a day (after which I would lose launcher settings, etc.), I tried a hard reset.

I have, in the week or so since then, continued to download new apps and play with them and launchers and widgets in every moment I can spare---only now I've had no restarts and no bugginess like before. I no longer use ATK, and I leave Wifi on most of the time (because I am often in places where I can use it) but not GPS. I no longer worry about battery strength.

I got 55 hours on my last charge. My use during that time included app installs, watching streaming video, and some phone conversations using a bluetooth headset.
