New home touch buttons after Lollipop

I do not like the new on screen touch buttons after the lollipop update. Does anyone know how to change them?

I think the only way you can modify the on-screen buttons is to root and apply a hack/patch or install a ROM with a modified button layout or images. There are 3rd party apps in the Play Store that allow you to mimic the buttons with your own layout on a floating toolbar, but can't remember if those need root or not.
