So my Pixel 2XL has arrived, and I already love it. The speed of everything, from fingerprint sensors to app switching, is incredible. The camera is living up to the hype and after all the worry, I'm very pleased with the screen (Blue shift is there, but otherwise it's gorgeous. There's a couple of small things that I can't quite work out though, so hopefully someone can help:

1. The camera doesn't take portrait in selfie mode. I know this means the software needs updating, but how on earth do I do so? Tried to Google but no clear explanation that works.

2. I'm still on 8.0 and September Security patch. There's no update available. is this normal? Is 8.1 still rolling out bit by bit?

3. I can't set up Android Pay. It said it would send me a text with verification code, never did. I asked for the code text again, never came. I asked for the email, never came. Now it says "A Code can no longer be used to verify your card. please choose a different method" but there is no other method!

What carrier are you using the device with?

For questions 1 and 3, the best bet would be to open the settings menu, click on the support tab and speak directly with Google about those two items. They can call you or you can direct chat with them directly from that interface.

You either have to install the APK file someone posted on the forum or wait 24 hours for the camera app update to appear in the Google Play Store. A bunch of other apps will be available to update as well. Suggest you ensure the Play Store is set to automatic updates.

Did you hit the button to check for updates to see if the security patch is available for your phone?

No clue about Android Pay. Sorry.

Thanks, waiting 24 hours seems like the easy (i.e. Lazy) option so I'll do that :) Why the 24 hour wait? I've never heard of that before (The other pre-installed Google Apps seem to have updated straight away).

EE, but the phone was bought from Google Store. I'll give support a try

Just wait for the updates or call support. We shouldn't be expected to manually install APKs on a 1K euro phone. Everything should work out of the box or at least after initial updates.

Is the 'wait 24 hours' thing an actual thing? Because the support chat people said I had to factory reset and, if that didn't work, replace under warranty. That sounds seriously extreme steps to me!

Are you saying that the front facing camera doesn't have the portrait setting in between Photo Sphere and Settings?

The option is there, but if I click on it then it changes to the rear camera and won't turn back to front until I click the X to leave portrait mode.

This seems to have been a common issue when the phone was first released, as it was an old version of the camera that needed updating. I just can't find a way to update the Camera to the current version (as it's not an App that you can just update from Google Play)/

1. Mine was the same way when I first got it. The camera app will be updated through the play store like any other app. I assume the wait is it just takes time for the store to know u have a new device and to add those app options.

2. 8.1 is not out yet unless you are in the beta. The November security patch is but it seems to be show rolling. These a thread specific to that for more info if your interested. There's a way to "force it" that was successful for me, but it's warned against.

3. I have no experience with Android pay, can't help there.

Enjoy the phone!

So the moral of the story is, trust AC Forum way more than Google Support!

Google Support got me to launch in Safe Mode, then restart a few times then declared I had to do a factory reset and, if that didn't help, replace via warranty.

You guys told me to just wait 24 hours.

I waited 24 hours and voila, Camera updates and Android Pay is sorted!

Still on September security, but assuming that's just waiting for the rollout to reach me.

Thanks all!
