New Phone; root before activating?

Hi all, I currently already have service with Virgin Mobile. I'm replacing my blackberry and just got my new LG Optimus V in the mail today. I definitely want to root it but I don't want to screw anything up.

Is it best to activate first, then root the phone, or does it matter? I would prefer to root first so if I do something that messes up my phone I can still use my old phone until I get the new one going, but I wanted to make sure I don't screw anything up rooting before activating also.

Obviously I'm new to android and rooting a cell phone so I want to be extra cautious.

Thanks all!

It shouldn't matter either way unless you were planning on loading a ROM at the same time. Personally I would just go ahead and activate it first.

It is recommended to activate before rooting because sometimes the activate.apk file will disappear after rooting.
