So my birthday is coming up and I get some money I was thing of getting the HTC one v but then again I am on the grandfathered plan so I was think about getting a nexus 7... maybe...

Or you can have the best of both worlds and buy a Galaxy Nexus and put it on T-Mobile prepaid for $30.

I have a One X and Galaxy S 3. I have never used them for anything besides tethering and phone calls sine buying the nexus 7. Buy the nexus 7, man. You'll have no regrets.

Do you find that your digital life is lacking by not having a tablet at your disposal? Do you find yourself doing something, either on your phone, or your PC, and saying "This would be so much better / easier on a tablet"?
If the answer to those is "no", I'd say put that money towards a new phone, because if you buy the Nexus 7 and it's nothing more than a toy, and you still spend a sizable chunk of time on your clunky old Optimus, you'll end up kicking yourself.

I say get a phone. I have a tab not a nexus but a Toshiba thrive and really even with the HDMI port mini USB and regular USB its kinda just there to mess with that's all. Tabs are cool but mostly just toys. So far the one v is amazing and its only 10 more a month. But there's other options to. But IMO the phone route is easily the best choice.

My (lame) opinion:
I personally prefer to have a low end smartphone in my pocket and a chromebook in my backpack. A cheap phone can do most of what I need. Everything else is much easier on the cr-48's 12 inch screen and full keyboard. A tablet could possibly take its place.

I didn't really think I did anything that I thought would be better on a tablet. After a few weeks with the N7, I don't know ow I'd live without it. Using a phone for browsing just feels painful now.
When I use harmonia2, yes tethering works flawlessly (I know that's gingerbread).
When I use quatrimmus (ICS), native tethering doesn't work, so you have to download an ad-hoc tethering ap.
ad-hoc does not work with nexus 7 out of the box, only native APs work (i never knew there was a distinction here until I bought a nexus 7 and found out that it wont find the ad-hoc network from ics).
You can of course root the nexus 7 and there is a way to modify the wifi_supplicant, or something to that effect, to make it play nice with ad-hoc. I havn't tried that though because I am quite happy with my nexus 7 stock outside of the ad-hoc issue. I got a kindle fire a while back. They are dirt cheap used. I love it. It runs jellybean real well. It got me away from wanting a new phone for a while. Now that my wife got the one v, and won't let me tamper it, I'm getting the new device itch again

My girlfriend has my old mytouch. When I gave it to her I told her she had to let me mess with it. she's usually okay with it, but she doesn't really like waking up with a broken cm9 or aokp on it without warning (Did that twice I think). Whenever I get that new device itch, I go mess with her phone, or one of the routers, or whatever else I can find. Usually works for a few hours. Then the itch comes back...... I need money
Stuff keeos getting pricier but as soon as I get money I'm buying another tab. Probably a nexus or wait for the kindle fire two. Either way the thrive is to big and bulky for my taste.

I don't like 10 inch tabs. My bro in law has a thrive. Its a bulky sluggish POS. I told him about the ics update for it. Its weird how there is no notifications or anything when there are OTA updates for it.
I would hold off until the kinks get worked out on the N7 and see if the next fire has expandable storage and Bluetooth. Those are the only 2 things I dislike about my current fire. I have no need for a camera. (I love it when you see press conferences or concerts and people are holding up ipads to take pictures) these budget 7 inch tablets are perfect for what I need. Im in the grocery business and you would not believe how many soccer moms walk around with ipads in their shopping carts, and I look at it and all they are doing is using the calculator. I understand shopping list apps and such, but 9 out 10 of them just have a 10inch calculator.
