New pixel 2 XL network band

Just received my new pixel 2 XL today and loving it so far. Only one thing is annoying me.
In the notification bar the network band and strength of displayed. On my UK device it's showing the network as being LTE instead of 4g. I'm on Vodafone 4g her in Ireland and I always have 4g showing, never LTE. It's the same for the rest of the Irish networks showing 4g.
Does the pixel 2 XL only display LTE regardless of country or network?
It's there a way of getting it to show the network signal as 4g instead of LTE?

What controls what is showing in the notification bar regarding LTE or 4g, I'd it the network or the phone itself?

I think it's the phone. I know here in the states there was a kerfuffle regarding AT&T branding some of their faster 3G HSDPA connections as "4G" and showing it as such on their carrier locked phones. They differentiated it from true 4G LTE by showing LTE on the phones when it was indeed connected via LTE. (This is from memory, so I may be off on the details.)

I'm inclined to think it's not the network that's causing the phone to show LTE as they don't use LTE at all on their network
