*NEW* Pros and Cons Epic thread (issues and fixes after update?)

you think firmware upgrades to fix existing issues are "free upgrades"? we're all beta testers these days dude

Yah, I am not very pleased to be a "beta tester"...fixing existing issues is a must. What I am referring to, though, are upgrades that add functionality that wasnt included in the initial release. For instance, support for Adobe Flash, or the addition of VOIP calling, or adding support for additional video codecs. You get the idea...

I'm not happy to hear about the google calendar issue. I'm coming from a tp2 and really depend on the two calendars syncing. What do you do to deal with this issue?

not to hossolo - Ebay exists, go make yourself happy - someone will buy your Epic, then you will have money to spend and not be miserable, nor make us miserable with pointless rantings.

And lross, you made me laugh, I hated Windows - maintaining my phone was
like maintaining a computer - with Android, you can play as little or as much as
you want to customize, but out of the box, it is better than any other systems
I have had.

Bugs, yes, learning more about battery issues than I really want to know, but
it is getting better everyday.

P.S. Took fall leaf pics yesterday and with my Olympus 7.1 megapixel camera,
the Epic's was better - wft - might drop lugging my camera around too!

one thing i hate is when u sync your Fb contacts to contacts in your phone the pics its uses are small thumbnails.. so when one of them calls u and it shows there pic its all blown out and distorted..

this is one of those things that i can't believe no one noticed in beta testing... like having the screen stay on with google nav. NO ONE that tested this phone noticed this problem?

my screen stays on with google nav, provided it's the foreground app.

wonder if this was fixed with the updates... i remember it not workign even in the foreground when i first got the phone.. sprint nav kept it on though. confirmed that it is workign now though

I got 2 issues:

1) Whenever my Epic is done charging, there's a pop-up saying that the phone is charged & to disconnect it. I shouldn't have to hit 'ok' every single time! Just pop-up for a few seconds & go away.

2) For some reason, I keep getting a 'Network Connection Error'. Especially after ending a phone call. I always have to hit either 'Retry' or 'Cancel'. If this has to do with data, then DUH!! I was on the phone & I can't do data & voice at the same time! Just another notification I don't want to be bothered with.

I'm open to any suggestions, if anyone has any. :/

it does sync both ways

the biggest issue I have with the Epic still persists.

I really hate the fact that the default calendar does not sync with google calendar and that you can't chage the default calendar to your gmail so that it will.

This is a HUGE ommision in my opinion.

yes, I know I can manually change each entry I make to my gmail calendar, but then I lose the quick entry feature, which I find very nice.

It would also be nice if I could set default things like alarms in the calendar etc. So that no matter what entry I put in I am reminded 15 min before for example.

I don't really have too many issues otherwise. My battery definitely is better after the update. My gps has always worked fine. etc

Hopefully this feature will come with froyo.

when you create an event on the phone you have to scroll down and choose which calendar to save to. the choice defaults to "my calendar" which is the phone's calendar. if you choose your gmail/google account then the next time it syncs it will show up correctly on google calendar.

My last phone was a Tmobile SideKick 2008. This phone is amazing when compared to the sidekick. I only have a couple of small issues with it such as the email apps not retrieving my email automatically every time. Other than that I love this phone.

Pre vs. Epic

Well Ive had my Epic almost a week so far and Im very impressed. Ive noticed some things about it that are better than the pre and some that are equal and some that are not. But over all its a move Im glad I made.

Much Better:
Screen size - Im getting older. It so nice not to have to resize everything.
Keyboard - again, the size.
App market - a ton of stuff, although the pre has most of the "basics" covered but some manufacturers apps and other cool stuff are not available (ie.. Canon Easy Share).
Phone Quality - On the Pre, people would tell me the get the phone off my shoulder. The clarity of the calls are like night and day .. after all it is a phone.
Camera and Video: Much better than my Pre.
SD Card: 16Gb standard, upgradable to 32 vs 8Gb internal.
Speaker: Much louder.
Finish: You had to buy the touchstone case for the back to get the standard harder to scratch case thats comes with the Epic.

Equal:
Typical slider issues. To be expected. Movement not as bad as the "oero effect" and the slider is much bigger with more room to play. My "Oreo" wasnt too bad and I wonder if some "pre"-madona's didnt blow it out of proportion.

Not so equal:
WebOS - Over all I think its smoother and multi-tasks better than Android but familiarity with Android is slowly overcoming any of the draw backs.
Fear of rooting - Web Doctor made me feel more secure about it. Im sure its only temporary. The flip side to this is that Android has so many features, tweeking it isnt really necessary.
Notification system: I like a light that stays on.
No dedicated volume/vibrate switch - just me

Im sure I forgot some stuff but.. I am Happy with the switch :)

I have a list of things myself. I agree with many things posted by you all, however. My list:

Pros-
Size: It may not be as big as an Evo, but given my small hands, this thing is a giant and offers plenty of real estate for me!

Build Quality: It's very sturdy and I don't see the "toyish" feel many are talking about?

Speaker Quality: Amazing speaker quality for things like music and phone calls. My poor Moment just seems to pale in comparison!

Interface: Touchwiz is alright, but I heavily prefer stock or another launcher (LauncherPro, Zeam, etc.).

Speed: This was a big deal breaker for me. Whilst I love my Moment to death, it just lagged too much. It's a great phone, just not what it could have been. The Epic, on the other hand, runs laps around my Moment. I've had almost no lag whatsoever.

Camera: The camera (front and back) are both really good in my opinion. Although the shake resistance doesn't seem to do much good, it's still very usable.

Upload/Download Speed: These both seem to be way faster than my Moment. I'm sure choice of browser has something to do with it as well (Xscope version 6).

Slab Effect: I love how the capacitive buttons disappear after a while. Makes it look totally cool sitting on a desk!

Data Lockups: I LOVE that I no longer have data lockups!!! Sure apps might take a little while to get data, and sometimes it's unsuccessful, but I think it really does have them, but the radio resets itself to prevent them/keep them from occurring as often. Just my guess, don't know if it's true or not lol.

Display: The display is amazing, and I hardly notice the "screen door effect." It's also quite better on the battery life then my Moment was.

Battery Life: Oh man. My battery life (even when I was all stock) was terrific. Once I got rooted, it was even better though (just like with the Moment). So, I haven't had any battery issues.

GPS: Accuracy and speed seem very good to me. Both are better than my Moment, and I always seem to get a lock, unless I'm in my basement lol.

Swype: When I first got the phone I never expected to use the onscreen keyboard as much as I do. Let me just say, Swype rules lol.

Lockscreen: I love swiping down to open an unread SMS message, however, I wish it could integrate with third party apps. I use K9 for my GMail (IMAP IDLE saves a ton of battery). It would be great to get those to work together!

Music Player: I rooted and removed the standard Android music player because it was, well blan! Now I've put the Touchwiz player on there and it rivals (and has almost replaced) my Zune HD lol. Pretty incredible seeing as how much I loved that thing lol.

There are a ton more, but if I keep listing them, we'll need another thread lol.

Cons-
Keyboard: The stock keyboard drops some of my presses, but this isn't a major issue. It only happens now and again, and is only a minor annoyance.

Customization: This bugged me about Touchwiz on the Epic. Not being able to customize the launcher that came with the phone (while other variations were customizable) really did aggravate me. However, after moving up to LaucherPro Plus, I haven't looked back =)

Charging Speed: The charging for this device takes ages it seems. I've started using another adapter which helps a lot, but still takes a bit.

Brightness Control on Notification Bar: This has been driving me crazy and I cant figure out how to disable it lol. I go to open my notifications and I up my brightness, it drives me crazy! Lol

That's about all I can think of at the moment lol. I got this phone as a replacement for my Moment, and for that it does an amazing job. I love this phone and use it every day, and can't put it down! Looking forward to FroYo and hopefully Gingerbread...maybe even Honeycomb!

since you are using launcher pro, go into the preferences menu and map the home key to open the notification bar when you press it on the home screen. should help with the brightness control problem
