*NEW* Pros and Cons Epic thread (issues and fixes after update?)

calendar

the biggest issue I have with the Epic still persists.

I really hate the fact that the default calendar does not sync with google calendar and that you can't chage the default calendar to your gmail so that it will.

This is a HUGE ommision in my opinion.

yes, I know I can manually change each entry I make to my gmail calendar, but then I lose the quick entry feature, which I find very nice.

It would also be nice if I could set default things like alarms in the calendar etc. So that no matter what entry I put in I am reminded 15 min before for example.

I don't really have too many issues otherwise. My battery definitely is better after the update. My gps has always worked fine. etc

Hopefully this feature will come with froyo.

fix the hardware keyboard!
gps issue
airplane toggle
froyo ;)
CAR DOCK!

Just wanted to say that Samsung Telecommunications released a Car Dock and Home Dock download in the market. I am not sure if that is what you're referring too though as far as Car Dock is concerned.

I still need to toggle airplane mode in low coverage area's when the signal isn't very strong.

Battery life seems to have improved though. 6% per hour with some light texting is very good for me at least.

I still kill DRM and media hub though just to be on safe side.

Getting 10% battery drain per hour since the update with moderate use. (was probably 20% or more before) The phone sleeps correctly now according to the Spare Parts app (it was running 100% before the update). One day with DRM off, another left it on. Doesn't seem to make a difference to the battery drain.

Still need to cycle airplane mode to fix the "Time without a signal" percentage under the Cell Standby battery usage.

I've gone through two phones and I'm expecting my third to arrive on wed.
There are most people that had problems with the battery life from software issues like the auto sleep not working. I have had a battery oveheat with my first epic though the battery life did last a good 15hrs without te opdate or the drm kill. The battery I have now with the update and the drm kill only 8 hrs. I figure its a battery issue as I've been reading some people have.

Also having problems wth my headphone jack, I plug in my headphones and it still plays the music from the speaker simultaneously with the hadphones. Strange.
Hope the new phone has none of this one's or any other one's problems.

I'm on my second Epic and after having it for a week-10 days or so the phone just seems to have "settled in". I'm getting a good day and a half with normal (for me) use out of the battery and suddenly getting a great signal at home, a good 2 bars more than usual. Give me 2.2 and fix the DRM and airplane toggle issues so I don't have to manually fix that stuff and I'm happy.

You're describing a google/android issue. You're forgetting that Android is far from a complete smartphone OS. Contacts and calendar are limited, email isn't truly integrated and fully functional, and there is no syncable memo app. You either learn to live with its shortcomings and figure out workarounds, go HTC which upgrades some of the core android apps, go webOS with old tech phones, or wait on WP7. One workaround for the calendar would be Jorte. That will default to gmail, the calendar is much nicer, and it has its own widgets.

So complain to google as it is an OS issue, not a phone/Samsung issue.

Honestly the epic sucks balls. I want to break this phone, it is such a pos. Where should I begin... the touchscreen is often unresponsive, u can't email more than a few megabites at a time and even at that the phone freezes up like a ******, media scanner runs right when u need to actually do somethin... WTF is media scanner running for and it takes nearly 10 mins to complete, youtube video quality is ****, 3g speeds are 1/3 that of the evo, there are no good roms for this ****ty UI, O and did I mention that samsung apps are worthless and the samsung UI is so far subpar to htc its ridiculious. This phone sucks, unless u are a kid who just plays games and doesn't make their phone actually work. Trading the evo for the epic was one of the worst mistakes of my life.... why didn't I think to upgrade my battery???? A mistake that I will kick myself for 745 more days... yeah right I'm dumping this pos at first sight of a dualcore android

I started to do a complete reply but decided to ignore instead. Coming from a Touch Pro 2, which I was able through others efforts, to make a good servicable phone...the EPIC is like a whole new world. After 2.2, the development will follow, but look where we're starting at.

The epic is the greatest thing since sliced bread...and pandora radio. :)
Love my phone and battery life has improved a lot along with up and download speeds via 3g and 4g.
I put my phone up against the Evo a lot since my buddy has one and our speeds are about the same...only difference is that his screen looks out of date :)

hard keyboard still skips letters somewhat consistently. Didn't think it was an issue at first, but once I started looking for it, it was tough to miss. I touch type very well, so going back and correcting is just second nature which is why I overlooked it. I know I'm not the first to see it either.

I don't even care about the slider. Having the Moment and a Pre, I knew what to expect and realize it's not going to fall apart. It just runs loose. Big deal.

Im sorry but you ppl are a bunch of spoiled babies

I have been stuck with sprint for at least 5 or 6 years. I didnt like blackberry's nor palm devices. so my last 5 or 6 phones have been windows mobile os version 5, 6, 6.1.,6.5. I had no idea that the android platform was so well developed. I was going to wait for windows 7 untill i heard it would be 1st quarter 2011 b4 it was release for sprint/verizon. Out of utter frustraion I went and bought an epic. This Frickin phone ROCKS! I can view my call history without having to stop my truck take out the stylus and carefully click 7 small areas of the screen. I can download terminal area approach plates for any airport in the country in 5 secs. and view them in a perfectly scaled and easily adjustable format. Ive got visual voice mail (Thank GOD, Thank GOD) Ive got free bootleg movies, A UI that i can customize so that everything is easy to access. I have about 7 RELLY good games. A handfull of other really useful apps. It does everything (no ****) 20 times better than the windows mobile phones i have been stuck with for the last several years. With the external battery charger and spare battery I can use the phone to the max all day long walk out to my truck about 2 oclock and slap in battery 2 and im good till 9 oclock at night. All hard core phone usage like phone as wifi for streaming movies to my laptop on netflix you name it.

As i see it the phone needs only 3 or 4 things.
Netflix player that lets me view "streaming watch it now" movies.
Better ability to watch different streaming content. (i hope 2.2 gives us this)
There are a couple of RPG games on the apple / IPad that I would like to see ported over.
Some improvements in the Calendar system , seemless integration with the google calander. and easier way to snooze, and change appointments as you days schedual changes.

JMO
Lee

stop your complaining and thank god that you have a phone that actually works as a phone, PDA, Entertainment platform, and internet access hot spot all in one light weight, attricative easy to use device.
I know I do everyday.
Thanks

you know its funny... if someone went out and bought a car with crappy build quality, and a bunch of issues that killed gas mileage, or electrical bugs, people would say "how could they put out a car that wasn't ready yet" but we all seem to just accept our technology, no matter how much with pay for it with a "thank you may i have another" attitude. now i happen to like this phone alot but i'm so tired of the sanctimonious attitude of some people because we expect things to work for the large amount we paid for them

Well, you could look at it that way...but, how often does Ford call you up and say, "Hey, I have a FREE upgrade that will give you another 50 horsepower! I will send a technician over to upgrade your vehicle at your convenience!"?

I like to think that I buy the phone, with the functionality it offers at launch, and during the year or two that I own the phone, I will get, FREE OF CHARGE, upgrades that will add functionality, improve reception and battery life, and much, much more!

Remember, Samsung already HAS YOUR MONEY...and they have delivered an EXCELLENT product...everything else in the future is just gravy! (not the brown kind, the kind you put on biscuits that has the little chunks of sausage!)

That being said, I am still looking forward to at least a RUMOR on when we can get Froyo and Flash 10.1! :)
