New render might give us our first look at Google’s Pixel 4 design

Using the Galaxy S10 reminds me where Google needs to improve with the Pixel 4

Google needs to follow more Samsung, less Apple. Samsung is doing something notably different than Apple by avoiding the notch, opting to lean into their screen processing and general hardware strengths. I really like what I've seen with the S10 and would more than welcome them to the Pixel.

This article nails it. None of this should be hard for Google to do for the Pixel 4.

I have no doubts the pixel 4 will be amazing phone .

if it doesn't offer a general improvement in functionality/ergonomics in more situations than it diminishes it when compared to what has been the standard solution, why?
That same question has been asked and answered regarding the headphone jack. Go figure.

For 3 years now, pixel phones always laged behind when it came to hardware design. Why would it be different this time? I don't see it. Google seems to not care that much about hardware, I mean look at that notch, slammed on there with no regards to appealing design.

Remember too that Google didn't give you wireless charging or water resistance until 2018 lol. For the record, I have pixel 3 xl and love the phone, but truth has to be told.

I'll give you that Notch bad design by Google how they went about it .
But rest of the phone is premium, performance been stealer for me .
I believe they will come out 2019 with great phone because they know they have to compete and I hope they do the Samsung punch hole design because it looks good , the specs it's getting SD 855 7nm processor and minimum 6gb ram which will make this thing really fly and keep apps longer in memory. The Al processing for camera is still the best and now they will probably add dual camera to the rear so I'm not concerned with the camera department , do want them focus on video though. Don't forget this will be their 4th generation they going in right direction.

Remember too that Google was never touted for their hardware and not everyone cares about the notch. The reason it's so tall is because they decided to leave the front firing speakers in place. There were also a number of phones that didn't offer wireless charging or water resistant much before Pixel.

There is no perfect phone. I have the 3XL, S10+ and the iPhone X. They all have their strengths and weaknesses

Doesn't the FFS take the same space in a notch as a regular earpiece grill on other phones with a far nicer notch?

Far Nicer? That's a personal choice.
As an example I prefer the Pixel design over the iPhone X.
Same amount of space for speaker grills would have to be compared on a case by case basis.

While it'd be nice, the hardware doesn't have to be 'best of the best' if the software makes up for it in overall user experience, an area in which Google has a proven track record. And the software continues to evolve and improve on the Pixel longer than other devices, whereas hardware is fixed at point of production.

Also, the 4 will have been designed wholly after the integration of the HTC engineers Google acquired, as opposed to the 3 which was already well underway when that team joined - we could (or, to be fair, could not) see a substantial amount of hardware design improvement.

I'm optimistic for the Pixel 4.

I think it's a bit change bc anything removing the huge notch is a big upgrade. Still love my pixel 3 xl..
I agree the notch is not so bad looking in person, anesthetically, my threat cell is beautiful looking. I love the pure white color have a comes up the sides of the phone. It's great smooth responsive performing phone... I have no problems with it I love my 3XL!

Well for the price the hardware should be closer to the best.

Same here I love the phone and the way the phone looks and feels regardless if it had a notch or no notch. Yes no notch would be better, but like I said it doesn't bother me that much. Besides if you really hate it just install notcho notch.

One could argue the same for other OEM's regarding software and support/updates ;)

Google gets a greater sum from its parts in terms of net user experience. Though I certainly wouldn't complain if they stepped it up a bit on those parts.

Different approaches from different sides.

Exactly! I mean I thought that the notch would really drive me nuts watching all the YouTube videos and what not online, but honestly, then not just fine. it's not as intrusive as everyone makes it out to be. The phone's performance it's smoothness it's responsiveness is the best in the market especially with Android Q beta the camera smokes most if not all of the smartphones on the market. The battery on the 3XL is just a beast! Really nothing to complain about at all

Decent looking, nothing special but at least its inline with the 2019 hole punch design...although its a little too safe and id prefer they implement something unique to its competitors. Im still very happy with my Pixel 3 (non-XL) no urge to upgrade, but i upgrade every 2 years on my hardware cycle and nothing inbetween.

After spending some time with the S10, there's no question the wide-angled lens on the back shooter is really fun and amazing to use.

The Pixel 3 camera is incredibly good in its own right and arguably better in most use cases than other smartphones, but Google would be foolish if they continued using only one lens on the back of the Pixel 4 for yet another year, especially if it's just to keep bragging rights about software superiority. Hardware matters and a second wide-angled lens does add to the experience. This is a concept they clearly understand for the front camera.

EDIT: And please improve video recording and squash the "poor/laggy camera performance" issue once and for all that has plagued some users -- that's an embarrassing issue for a smartphone whose main selling point is the camera experience.

Samsung doesn't incorporate the features that iPhone did into their notch which is why they went small instead of big

I would be happy to see a wide angle. A tele lens would be an extra plus but their digital zoom is pretty good even when I compare it to the S10 plus. The lag you mention I believe is mostly a user based problem. Their video quality certainly has an extreme amount of room for improvement.

LED notification light too please like BlackBerries so you can see if you have a message without opening the phone or picking it up.

One work-around to that is to enable the always on display which would show you notifications without having to open or pick-up the phone. Personally, I don't have it enabled to maximize battery life, but the general consensus here seems to be it doesn't use up lots of battery.
