Android Central Question

Have a Samsung Galaxy S8. I've copied all the files from my 64 GB SD card to a folder on my PC. I will copy them from the PC folder to my new 256 GB card.

I would like to insert the 256 GB card in my phone with all those files on it. Can I just stick the card in the phone or do I have to format it or mount it somehow?

Once formatted, you'll notice some new folders on the card. LOST.DIR, and ANDROID would be the two root folders I know of off hand. In the past I've swapped a card between different phones and it worked fine, but I had to format a brand new one recently. When I transferred everything, I didn't copy those extra folders created from formatting the old card and the phone wouldn't read it when I tried without formatting. It's a guess, but you may not have to format the new one if you copied those folders along with everything else to the new card. If you only transfer your own files and not the formatted folders, then you for sure will need to format the card in the phone first.

So put the new card in the phone, format it, then take it out and pop it in the PC to get the files. Then put it back in.
That's how I did it. If you copied absolutely everything from the old card, wouldn't hurt to try without formatting first. It'll only cost you a bit of time if it doesn't work. Just remember to COPY, not MOVE.
