I returned an Epic today and picked up a Shift. After playing with it for several hours, I have a few questions.

1. There is an update in my notification bar for voicemail when I try to install it I get this message "there was a problem checking for update". I have tried several times with no success. *SOLVED, THANKS*

2. The unlock screen that shows first after the phone has been idle, can it be removed and if so how. I use a pattern lock and it's a pain to have to slide that down and then do the pattern. SOLVED, THANKS*

3. I am coming from a Blackberry and the only thing I really miss is my notification tones and the ability to assign a different tone to messages, emails... can this be done? I was able to find and download the tones and they worked fine on the Epic. I installed them on the Shift and they don't show up as choices to select. Any ideas?

****I have added a folder "Notifications", installed the files, restarted the phone but I still can't find the files. On a side note, the SD card I'm using has gone though 3 Blackberrys and a Cliq as well as the Epic I returned. With that in mind, should I format it and start fresh?****

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Keep trying it wont go away until it is installed
2. No Lock it is available for free in the Android Market
3. Put your notifications in a folder on the root of your SD card and name the folder notifications reset the phone (power off power on) and they will show up.

Hope that halps,
Dave

I haven't seen a voicemail update on my Shift, but, I did once on my old Hero. If I remember correctly, I had to go into Settings > Applications, and put a checkmark in the box next to "Unknown Sources" (which allows installation of non-Market applications). After finishing the update the I went back and unchecked that box.

I just installed that update yesterday. When I had Wifi on it wouldnt install, but once i turned it off and used 3G it worked on the first try.
