New SIM card for A9?

I just got an AT&T text message that says "Your new device requires a new SIM card to give you access to all services. Please visit your local ATT store to get a new SIM".

I double checked my SIM to make sure I had put an LTE SIM in it and sure enough the 9th and 10th digits are 25, which according to AT&T means that it is correct. "If the ninth and tenth digits of the SIM number are 25, 26, 27, or 28, you already have an LTE-capable SIM card and no action further action is required."

Maybe it is just because I have been switching between my 2015 Moto X PE the past few days but other than that I am not sure why I would need a new one.

Any ideas?

Don't know about your existing card, but AT&T will give you a new one free of charge. At least they didn't charge me for the new one.

I'll be pulling my SIM out of my MXPE in a day or two and putting it in my A9. I'll check back here if there is any problem.

Did you purchase the Unlocked A9 or at&t Branded one?

Thanks everyone. I read quite a few posts about iPhone users having this message but not so much with Android users.

This is an unlocked A9 directly from HTC.

I like some things about it...small, light, thin, plenty fast, finger print scanner is pretty neat but the screen has to be at almost 100% brightness for my liking compared to my 2015 Moto X PE that I keep at about 25% unless I am outside.

Not sure yet if I will keep this or not. I have been switching between my XPE and LG G Flex 2, that I use when I want a lighter, smaller, thinner phone and I love how it feels in my hand, but it has its cons too. I was thinking about replacing the Flex with this A9 so I have an other couple of weeks before the 30 days is up to decide.

So does your unlocked a9 support VoLTE or HD Voice? Of course you can't test this unless your in an HD Voice coverage area.

The way you can check is to simply watch you mobile connection when you place a call. Does it show LTE while in a call or drops to H? You may have to turn WiFi off to see the connection change.

This is the only thing keeping me away from Going unlocked.

I just checked the map and we have it here in Austin Tx so I will see what happens when I swap back to my A9 later today. I am trying to remember when I switched from a micro to a nano sim and I think it was when I got my 2013 Moto X, so that is an older SIM that says it is fine for LTE per my earlier post but checking on VoLTE and HD Voice comes up with this:

"You must have a SIM card installed in your device that’s compatible with AT&T HD Voice. Use the SIM card that came with your AT&T HD Voice-capable device. A compatible SIM card will have the digits 27 or 28 in the 9th and 10th positions."

Since mine has a 25 in the 9th and 10th and not 27 or 28, that may be why I got the text from AT&T to upgrade. So I will stop by an AT&T store with it later today when I run some errands, swap it out, and see what I can find out about VoLTE and HD Voice.

Nail on the head. That is why I was wondering why you were getting the text to get a new sim card. From what I understand att is supporting a limited number of phones for volte, specifically branded models they sell. I'm curious to see if they will support the unlocked a9 vs the carrier branded one. If they do it will be the first unlocked model, that I know of, that att supports volte.

Just wondering if you got a chance to swap the sim.

Sorry, didn't get to do it this weekend but my wife and I are both going to AT&T after work as her dad got an iPhone6S and gave her his iPhone6. She currently has a 4s so this is a pretty sweet upgrade for her and she will need a nano SIM since the 4S uses a micro.

Oddly enough, I was using my Moto XPE yesterday and got the same text from AT&T about needing a new SIM.

As far as testing goes, I should be able to with my wife's iPhone6 as long as AT&T is providing it in our area. I looked at a map that seemed to show that it is in our area but I am not 100% so I will see if there is anyone at the store who knows.

Per AT&T's site:

HD Voice has limited availability in select markets. May not be available in your area. Deployment is ongoing. HD Voice Requirements: To experience HD Voice, both parties on the call must be located in an AT&T HD Voice coverage area and have an AT&T HD Voice-capable device and SIM with HD Voice set up on their account. HD Voice-capable device selection is limited at this time. Incompatible Services/Features: The following services/features are currently incompatible with HD Voice: prepaid service, Smart Limits, Ringback Tones, and OfficeDirect and OfficeReach (for business customers). HD Voice is available at no additional cost; standard voice rates apply and are charged according to your wireless rate plan. Demo provides example of actual HD Voice call. Results not guaranteed.

Following up on this, I have not seen anyone reporting using this on AT&T and there is no way to enable it from my AT&T account like I see Verizon customers being able to do.

I do have it checked on my A9 settings.

Well that's more than I see on my Nexus 6. lol So if you call out does you phone roll back to HSPA or stay connected to LTE? Looking at your screen shot you'll have to turn off your wifi to see if it does. If it switches to H when you place a call then it's not using VoLTE. If it still shows LTE while in a call... it works! Exciting news if it does. This will be the first unbranded/unlocked phone that I know of that at&t allows to use their VoLTE.

I will need to make sure my wifes iPhone6 is set up for it too since it says "both parties on the call must be located in an AT&T HD Voice coverage area and have an AT&T HD Voice-capable device and SIM with HD Voice set up on their account." I will ask about any specifics on our account while we are at the AT&T store getting our new SIM cards.

Surprised that my 2015 Moto X Pure Edition does not have this.

I just looked at the map again and we are in an area with HD Voice coverage so hopefully we will get to see this work.

I'm currently comparing the A9 and the nexus 5x and I experience the same thing. I need my brightness to be at about 80% compared to about 40% on the 5x.

Ah yes that is true for HD voice, but your phone can still use VoLTE without the call being HD Voice call. The call will sound the same but will be VoLTE. I'm not as worried about the HD Voice as much as the VoLTE. The reason being is because VoLTE in my area will great improve coverage.

So you'll need not worry about the other person having a HD Voice capable phone. You're phone will still will use VoLTE. You'll not get the HD voice but your call will still go out over LTE.

Unfortunately the AT&T all closed at 6:00 today even though they still showed as being open until 9:00 on Google. I thought it took holiday hours into account? Anyway, I will stop by one on Friday if there are not any crazy lines, which I am not sure how it will be at AT&T stores versus places like Best Buy and the like, but probably won't be too bad.

This is the main thing that will probably make me return the phone. I can see the text on all of my other phones just fine but for some reason it is just hard to see on certain screens and having to have the brightness cranked so high is a battery drainer.
