New to android but MUST have app

I really like Swiftkey 3. The themes are nice but I'm not sure if I'm typing faster because there's a placebo effect or it's physiological :P

This thread looks like an advertisement to me. I could be wrong

1) SwiftKey 3 is just amazing. I loved the beta and it blew me away! Its now my stock keyboard on all of my devices!

2) Amazon App store. We all love pretty paid apps! Cant complain. I mean hell I got the old swiftkey for free from them one day (So 3 came free as well!). Plus many others!

I will personally be looking for a new messaging app soon in the coming days I think. Otherwise the phone has been great! Really wish we could get rid of the bloatware. That will come with rooting after having the phone for a bit.

Cheers!

does swiftkey have swype functionality? If not, are any of you former swype devotees among those raving about swiftkey? I feel like I can type the fastest with swype.

I'm a Swype devotee from the days of Windows Mobile 6.5 (Touch Pro 2), and I have given Swiftkey (and other keyboards) a try every time I see a new update mentioned on the various Android sites/forums. I've really tried to give Swiftkey (any version) a fighting chance, hearing how many folks love it's predictions. But, for me, the "swype" method of input must be toooo ingrained in my head. I simply cannot go more than a few sentences without needing to just swype out a few words.

For me, it may not even be that Swype is more efficient than SwiftKey. I just think that with 2-3 years of Swype being my primary input method, there's unfortunately no way that my brain can be reprogrammed to think that touch-typing (even when I don't have to type the whole word), is better than just flowing from word to word.

The best of both worlds would be to combine the SwiftKey touch-typing and prediction with Swype's method. That way, when you want to swype, you can.. when you want to tap it out, it uses amazing prediction.

I will keep trying it, and will always give it a chance... but, Swype is just tooo good and works too well for my needs.

Then it sounds like the latest Swype beta is exactly what you are looking for.

It even has all the "Learn from" options (Facebook, Twitter, Gmail and SMS) that SwiftKey does.

I love Swype (have not tried the new beta). I did purchase Swiftkey 3 because it was on Sale and I am loving it as well. I just wish it had "auto-text" shortcuts like BlackBerry.

Yep, after using BlackBerry for years, this is one of my big disappointments with my move to Android with the S3. Is there seriously no keyboard offering auto-text?!?! I've used it for so many years on BlackBerry and its such a timesaver, I can't believe its completely missing here.

I've always felt Swiftkey was overrated. It's a good keyboard but no where near the amount of praise it has had. Siftwkey 3 however is a different ballpark, it is really a great keyboard.

That said FlexT9 is still the best keyboard. The predictive text and speed are just the best, it's well ahead of Swype, Swiftkey, SlideIT(this is the worst one).

I have done some of my own testing/benchmark. With FlexT9 I can type twice as fast, including accuracy, than the other keyboards. Since Swiftkey 3 the gap has shrunk now FlexT9 only slightly faster.

I haven't tried the latest version of Swype, However a lot of the new changes to the beta are stuff already included in FlexT9. So I don't believe the improvement will be all that great.

I wonder if Nuance is merging the two technologies and then going with one product.

There is but it just done differently.

Both with Swype and FlexT9 you can program a pattern over words that will generate whatever word you want. To find out how to do it look in the tutorial section of your keyboard. In addition to this both keyboards have gestures so you can program a gesture that will generate a word for you, great for emails, URLS, password.

With what I'm used to from BlackBerry, we're not talking just words, but entire phrases. For instance - since I was typing it a lot in notes back and forth to my wife - I simply set it up in auto-text to insert "I love you" whenever I typed ilu. So, ilu[space], and the entire phrase appears. I've had a number of phrases like that which I could type with 2-3 keystrokes.

The other thing for me which is a huge learning curve - on BlackBerry, a long press capitalizes the word. Of course, that means you have to hit a "shift" key to get the alternative symbol. Here's its just the opposite - with SwiftKey a long press gets the alternative symbol, but I have to hit shift for caps. That, admittedly, may be just a learning curve I have to retrain myself for. But the lack of auto-text is really puzzling, I figured that was way "old hat" by now.

In addition to "auto-text", "copy & paste" in emails is a nightmare. I have not found a keyboard to do either.

I used sWype for about 18 months and switched to SwiftKey 3 on my EVO 4G about two weeks ago because I can't download the new Swype for some reason. When I get my S3 on Friday I will be going back to swype. Swift Key is nice and works well but I can text so much faster using Swype and also text with one hand much easier. Can't wait to use the new Swype and it's free...all the time! :D
