I use a iphone and windows 7 on computers.

Just got the Nexus 7 32MB yesterday. No nothing about the chrome browser or Android. Can I use Internet Explorer 8 on this tablet. I know you think I'm crazy, but that is what I know.

Also, must all apps be downloaded from that Google store.

Thanks for any help or advice given

1 There are other browsers besides chrome that are good. But internet explorer 8 won't work on android.

2 Most if not all apps come from the play store. But you can download apps other places if they are android apps.

There are alternative browsers such as dolphin but no Internet Explorer on Android. I stopped using IE a long time ago, used Firefox for a good while until Chrome stepped up, which I use now. Sync bookmarks and pages is a wonderful feature.

It is best to get your apps from the play store or Amazon app store, they are trusted sites. It is possible to pick up viruses and malicious code from non trusted sources.

Download the free Nexus 7 guidebook from Google play to get you stated with the basics.

Also depends on how technical you want to get, you can further read about unlocking the bootloader and rooting your device.

I'm a newbie also, if you dwld an app from a non google site to your computer would your computer virus checker (kaspersky) pick up a virus before you moved it to the Nexus and are there any virus/antimalware programs you can run on the Nexus

I am not sure if anti-virus for the PC/Mac is developed to pick up any malware or viruses for the Android apk. However you can get free anti virus, malware scanner app and device finder for the N7 and phones. Such as lookout, avast, avg, etc. You can find them on the play store.

At the end of the day, use your judgement and best discretion to prevent first.

Nope. dont think so. I would recommend downloading apps only from play store especially for a newbie.

You can download the amazon app store as an apk, they have a free app-of-the-day--usually crap 99% of the time, but occasionally they have some good ones for free. You can sideload apk's, but you do run the risk of installing something corrupted. As a general rule for downloading apps within the Play store, only download things with like, 10,000+ downloads. Obscure ones might be a little fishy.

I've had my N7 for almost 2 months now, so I'd recommend doing the following if you're a newbie:
Download Flash
-Follow the tutorial and sideload the apk from here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...rum/189897-no-flash-got-you-down-try-fix.html
-Download a browser that supports HD flash, for optimal quality. I use xScope, but I hear that Dolphin and Boat are great too.

Good Apps for Optimized Tablet Use
-A screen filter app: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...om.haxor&feature=search_result&token=CFjYIt6v, to dim the screen beyond the min.
-This app: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...pps/details?id=com.painless.pc&token=O8qmBBB5 allows you to add basic toggles (wifi, gps, etc) to your notifications window, which you can access just by dragging down; this way, you don't need to exit your current window just to to turn wifi off, dim the screen, etc.
-If you want a customizable text clock widget, download https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...d=in.vineetsirohi.customwidget&token=60-ue8E9
-It's always good to have an HD Widgets app, for your clock/weather widgets. Popular ones include HD Widgets and Beautiful Widgets
-If you feel that the stock launcher doesn't offer enough customization, download something like Nova Launcher Prime--things like app drawers, widget overlaying, altering the desktop grid, etc, aren't necessary but are nice little extras.

If for some reason you want your N7 to function as your GPS, dl a cheap navigation app: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...lk.copilot.namarket.premiumusa&token=quGZhg5t which has offline POI's. Stock navigation is pretty sluggish without wifi, at least for me. This: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU2279202 seems to work well as a mount.

Pocket: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...com.ideashower.readitlater.pro&token=yYHpCiLq is useful for saving articles to read later (since it's wifi-only, definitely comes in handy). Evernote: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...e/apps/details?id=com.evernote&token=e-t0N9w0 is just great to have. Anyway, those are some basic tips. Just search online for "best apps for nexus 7" or "nexus 7 tutorial" or something like that.

Some of us would like to use IE on the Nexus because we have to. In my line of work I interact with a number of websites to file reports and some of those websites are IE only websites. Kinda makes the Nexus useless as a work platform for me and anyone else that interacts with these kinds of websites. So right now my Nexus sits on a shelf on my desk and hasn't been turned on in over a month. That's how useful it is to me.

you should definitley quit your job :p
I use mine on a daily basis at work for to-do list / calendar / evernote / timer / etc etc

I can use my smart phone (Android) for all of that. But, when I want to do some real work I need something that can handle it. Right now that's my netbook computer than can run IE when I need to.

Just to clarify something, I don't like IE anymore than most others. I use Firefox as my browser of choice. But, some of the financial institutions I interact with on a daily basis in my job don't accept anything other than IE to connect to their secure websites.

There is no Android version of Internet Explorer... so why would you buy the Nexus 7 if you need to work with Internet Explorer?

Thanks for the replies. I have a lot to learn about Android. Any links to beginner help?

There are some excellent You Tube videos called Nexus 7 Basics - (#1 -> 20ish) that provide some great helpful hints and alternatives that are priceless such as using a USB keyboard, non-rooted USB access etc. I'm brand new to Android and going thru the same learning curve. The members here ROCK and have been so patient and helpful too.
