Hello

I have just setup a new galaxy from scratch as a previous iOS user

I am finding the battery literally drains while I am using the phone. I have done the expected reducing brightness, processor speed to no avail

Can anybody advise? Unless I have a dud phone it is unacceptable and makes my years old iPhone 6 look stellar in comparison

Welcome to the forum. There is a thread in this forum for iOS to S8 converts, you may want to read that over for lots of good information. The battery on the S8 is actually pretty good, so I'm sure those hints will help.

Go through your apps from the settings menu and disable the apps you don't use. Lots of carrier bloatware are preinstalled, go ahead and disable them. The thing with iPhones is they don't have bloatware because carriers aren't allowed to change anything. Also give your phone 1 week to adjust. The Android operating system with monitor your app habits and adjust accordingly. Also, the battery is new and needs to warm up after several charges. Give it 1-2 weeks. If still no improvement, try using an app called greenify, but only use manual hibernation.

Why do you suggest only manual hibernation with Greenify?

Yep. Check out that thread. I'm not doing anything special at all and I'm getting about the same battery life as my 7 Plus. It took it about a week to really settle in, but now I lose about 3-4% overnight just like my iPhone and I easily get a full day on a charge if I need it. The only time I notice quicker drain is if I'm using maps and playing music in the car. Then it drains quicker, but so would my iPhone.

Battery drains while using the phone ? I don't see nothing wrong lol if it didn't that'd be weird xD

Some apps are set to update continuously in the background by default, even if you've never used them. Google Play Newsstand is one such culprit. Having location on can also contribute. Check your apps to see whether anything is updating in the background. In addition, leaving phone visibility and
mobile hot-spots on can contribute.

Best solution would be sell the phone and get a op5,LG G6 or htc u11. Samsung has still not figured it out after many years and this is no different. All the phones I listed will perform better, not lag, and have no battery drain issues.

How much battery will you go through playing music in the car?

My Accord has bluetooth and I've been using an iPhone 6S+ with that for music and for the phone functions. After 7 hrs of being in the car, the battery will be at 96-97% or so.

I haven't used any Android phones for this yet because the iPhone works so amazingly well with my cars system. I will try out my S8+ soon though.

That just sounds bias..... I own an s8+ had absolutely no issues with either lag or battery life the g6 is it's main competitor since it's the only other "bezeless" phone in the market right now but it has a snapdragon 821 instead of the 835 because Lg were too much in a hurry to cash in before the s8 came out. Just because you had a bad experience (if you even owned the phone) dosen't mean it's a bad one.

I have not done ant long trips with it so I'm not 100% sure. I'd be surprised if it was as good as the iPhone though. I get very good battery just like you do with my iPhone.

I use the S8+ on my 30 minute commute and I might lose a percent or two in that time listening to music or podcasts.

I really don't think it's an issue with the phone itself. The biggest problem with Android in general are the apps some apps just don't play along together which in turn causes a lot problems and battery drain. Good example are the live wallpapers as cool as they are they are totally useless just cosmetic offer nothing to the phone but yet people install them just to have a good looking wallpaper to show off. Also android is a huge market way too many phones and models to accommodate so therefore programmers that designed apps needs to be consistently updating and patching their apps cause not all phones will play nice so its no different from any computer (windows)
