New to Kernels and need some advice

I have been running Fresh 3.5.0.1 for a long time now. was also on CM6.1.2 and then tried out CM7. I am now on MikFroyo which so far is my favorite but I am noticing I'm getting worse battery life than when using Fresh...What are kernels exactly and how do they all work? I've heard of BFS CFS some with havs and some with no havs. Which kernel is a good one to try with most sense roms and what are some good ones to use with AOSP?
