New update

Macdtek - are you still on the November patch? I am (also retgb channel). This is now so out of date that I'm wondering whether there's something wrong with my phone. I've tried wiping the cache partition in case something there was blocking updates, but nothing has changed. If you're still on November I'll be sad but not worried.

Graham I am still on November and like you I've done the cache etc, etc but still nothing. I'm not loosing sleep just yet.

Are you with a G5 or G5 Plus ?
The G5 is still on the Nov security patch as I have read elsewhere but the G5 Plus is mostly on the March security patch (though I read that some XDA users on RETEU have got the April security patch).

G5 plus unlocked in the Uk on a BT sim. just checked and still nothing.

I hope you receive the security patches soon. My region ( and other regions too) received the Jan and March security patches after Nov patch. We in India received them after the other regions whereas when I had the G4 plus,we would receive all updates earlier just after Brazil did.

I too have a G5 plus, on the 'retgb' update channel. There are a couple of possible explanations of why we're behind. 1) Brazil, India, etc. are big markets for Motorola, whereas the UK isn't, and so updates aren't considered to be so important; or 2) update managers at Motorola believe the UK to be part of the EU (which of course it still is, for the immediate future though probably not in the longer term) and haven't realised that the UK has a separate retgb update channel.

I'm not really sure why the separate retgb channel exists. The only thing I can think of is that in the UK we use wifi channels (at 2.4GHz, don't know about 5GHz) 1-13 and in the rest of the EU channels 1-14 are used. (America uses only channels 1-11. Don't know about the rest of the world, sorry.) The lack of worldwide standardisation here is a pain, but probably isn't important enough to make standardising worthwhile.

[Edit: I've just submitted a question about this to Motorola UK support. I'll let you all know if I get a reply.]

I also find it irksome that the same phone model is launched with different specifications in different regions.

Nice ine Graham. I was going to do the same, but I'll wait to see what reply you get.

Here is the response I got from Motorola. The link mentioned in the message (all the links except for the blog all go to the same page) is not helpful. I love that the G5+ is now called an 'older device', but it's probably based on a misunderstanding. All the countries mentioned in the discontinued chennels list are now covered by the 'reteu' channel. The author is possibly not aware that 'retgb' has remained separate - even, I suspect, in 'newer devices'. Anyway, this reply, while polite, is not very useful as it doesn't recognise the difference between security updates and Android version updates. As Macdtek says above, any security update from this year would be nice.

Dear Mr. Thomas

Thank you for contacting Motorola.

Thank you for your email.

As far as "Software Channel" is concerned. - in older device there were channel that are country specific such as "RetFR", retDE, retPL etc. etc. and the trend over time that they all get under blanket reteu - in some newest devices, there are no more retGB, however some, such as yours still have retGB.
We do not know why this is happening in such order, but it is pretty likely that regb will be phased out in the future.

The relevant team is aware that some countries have not received the updates yet and they are working on releasing such updates.

We try to deliver upgrades as soon as they are ready. Across our product portfolio, the mixture of devices, regions and distribution channels means that we have hundreds of software versions to validate and test before pushing to your specific device.

There can be dependencies on carriers and other key partners that will take more time (certifications, independent testing or requests for additional changes). This is why sometimes you will see an upgrade for a device model go to one group of users, but take significantly longer to get to another - even in the same region.

As soon as we know your specific device will be upgraded and when, we post the latest information on Motorola’s software updates page<https://mobilesupport.lenovo.com/uk/ek/softwareupgrade>.
We also have a blog<https://plus.google.com/u/0/+DavidSchuster/posts/1q74Bx3K4my> that discusses current software update issues and questions hosted by one of our internal experts!

We get their information from the same software updates page<https://mobilesupport.lenovo.com/uk/ek/softwareupgrade>, so if you don’t see a specific date on our site, it’s because we don’t have a date for your device yet.

I recommend to check our Software Update Page occasionally - https://mobilesupport.lenovo.com/us/en/softwareupgrade/countryselector

For any further assistance or information please do not hesitate to contact us, quoting your Customer Reference number. We are reachable on 03339 997 550 to discuss the matter further with one of our experienced customer service agents. Please contact us any time between the hours of 8 AM and 6 PM from Monday to Friday.

Kind regards,

Why are G5 Plus phones on the 'retgb' software update channel still on the November 2017 security update? Phones in Brazil, India (for sure), the USA and EU (I believe) have additionally had January and March 2018 updates? I know this from the evidence of my own phone and from contributions to Motorola forums on the Motorola and Android Central sites.

Does Motorola think the UK market is so small that it can't be bothered with updates? Or does Motorola think the UK is covered by 'reteu' channel updates? It isn't. For whatever reason (maybe wifi channel ranges, which aren't standardised worldwide) the UK has always had a separate Motorola update channel.

Can you please ask the relevant department to release the January and March updates to the UK?

Best regards,

Graham Thomas

I've replied to Motorola support and again asked why security updates for retgb have stopped. Macdtek, perhaps you'd like to reinforce this?

Getting to the contact form on the Motorola UK website is a bit tricky but it is reachable with persistence.

Cheers for the update Graham. If Im not mistaken its one of those replies that has alot of words but still says nothing. Bit like my local council when I asked a temporary set of traffic lights that had been put up on the enterance to my cul de sac.

Ill trybto contact them aswell and ask why we're not getting any timely updates?

I've just pulled my old dtek 60 out of its box and the first thing it did was update the security to April 2018, then the apps all over the wifi with no sim card.

Say what you want about BlackBerry and BlackBerry hardware, their updates have been pretty decent and the pricing has been as well.

If the screen didnt have the low temp on the right hand side issue, and the customer service had been better I may not have changed. Mind the g5 plus is an awesome phone IMHO. lts just these days of data problems and hacking, it woukd be. ice to know that my phone is still some what secure.

Here's the reply from Motorola UK support to my response to their first answer. This one is a bit more informative, though still unspecific:

"Certain devices, for example Z2 Force only has "reteu", so it seems "retgb" will eventually disappear. In the past, channels were more important, nowadays, while many devices are "reteu" they still get updates at slightly different times because Sim Cards are used to determine the location and software update for devices (for example devices with "reteu" channels in Germany and Sweden with local Sim Card would still get updates at sligthly different times, despite being both in the same channel)

The security updates for the UK has not stopped, they are being released with a delay compared to some region, our engineers are aware of this and are working to release the updates.
I understand your frustration and I am sorry for the delay."

Hmmmm!, lets wait (even ! longer) and see. Nice one Graham. Still no reply to me.

Moto G5 Plus got the April security patch today evening in India. I have just finished installing it on my phone. Build number is NPNS25.137-92-10
