I was just going to post this. Yes, these prices are outrageous. My wife is looking to get a different smartphone. The Verizon CS rep told me that as long as we are keeping the smartphone data plan, just changing what phone we have we will keep the unlimited data. So if you are currently have a smartphone data plan and are renewing your contract you will still have your unlimited data.

Why not just get an unlocked android phone and buy local sims? I'm doing that in Afghanistan for at least an order of magnitude less cost that international data roaming.
So I will keep unlimited 3G if I renew the contract and get my new phone at one year? A new phone after the one year for the last time, of course, because of that eliminated program.

Moving over a Feature Phone User to a Smartphone
I have a question and hope someone here can advise me.
My family is on a Verizon family plan. My husband and I both have Droids with unlimited data. My daughter has a feature phone with the 10 dollar data plan. It appears with these new tiered structures that my husband and I will be grandfathered in with unlimited data, but not my daughter.
So what happens if I buy her a used smartphone from eBay and then bring it in before July 7th to move her over to unlimited data? Will they allow me to do that, or will they ask me to extend her contract? Since I am not buying the phone from them, I am not sure how this will work.
Any info is appreciated. Thank you.

If you think she is going to use a smartphone with data in the future I would buy a droid or other smartphone off of craigslist/ebay and put her in the unlimited data plan before the 7th, especially since you have no idea how much data she will use
To answer your question regarding it it would extend your contract, no it will not because you bought it unsubsidized from an outside source, so no contract extension!

I am in the same boat, my daughter wants a smartphone. I think I might just bite the bullet and get in now with unlimited data: Since more than likely when she gets older she will be locked in with unlimited data!
I bet going from a 3G phone to 4G phone voids the unlimited data somehow. I hope it doesn't but I bet they make something up.

Thats what I'm thinking too. I just upgraded to a Thunderbolt to lock in unlimited 4G but haven't activated it yet if they will really let me upgrade to the Bionic later and keep unlimited data with 4G. I really don't trust Verizon though.
It's not supposed to, but knowing Verizon they will try to find a way for that to happen.
I've had a chance to hear the opinion of multiple Verizon reps, both from sites and speaking to them, none of them like the new tiered plans and admit that it is good to try and lock in unlimited if you can.
You'd think with all the money Verizon screws makes from all the subscribers, they'd spend more to improve their network and before anyone says LTE costs a lot, that's not a suitable excuse considering it has been having problems since day one and it's all bells and whistles.
New to the smartphone market... So as long as I am under contract by July 7 i should be able to subscribe to unlimited plan?
I confirmed this today, if you currently have a feature phone that is not on the Unlimited plan already (ie 10 plan) you would not be able to get the Unlimited plan again after 07/07, you would have to select the new pricing...so I would get it while you can.

With the new data plan
No upcoming phones that are no real upgrades to what I already have(I do see other carriers with phones that would be)
And the fact they stopped "new every 2" ( I still have now it but will loose on upgrade thats available now)
All these combined are pushing me away from vzw.

I have an ENV touch and I have the option to change my features from $10 for 25 MB to $29.99 for unlimited.
I am also eligible for an early upgrade and plan on upgrading to the bionic when it comes out, will i be grandfathered in?
