Just went through the Note 7 fiasco and it is finally over. I noted a lot of folks paid the total Verizon bill for their new phones. They seemed to have the most difficulty getting their money back. I did not do that, I just figured paying it by the month with zero interest was a no brainer. What did I miss, why do folks pay for something by the month when you can get partial payments monthly with no interest? Mickeyboat

Some people would just rather pay the phone off and not have a bill if they have the cash at hand.

Exactly. I have been saving the money for a new phone since I bought my present phone. I have enough saved to buy it outright. No need for a payment plan. I saved the payments in advance but I was not "obligated" to make a payment to myself.

There is a hidden charge when you don't buy the phone outright, it's buried in the fees. When I paid off my phone early my bill was reduced $~5/month in addition to the $17/month phone payoff. Contact customer service and have them verify it.

Well, that may have been true for you, but I just bought a phone on payment plan and my bill went up exactly 5 bucks so maybe that's not always the case.

Some people prefer not to be tied to a long term commitment, in the past people didn't like service contracts either. If course with service contract you gotta pay ETF when you leave, whereas here you pay off the balance . It ends to being about the same though.
