I am thinking about switching from my Blackberry to an Android. I am a Verizon customer.

Here is where I am confused. I understand that while setting up an android device, My Gmail contacts will be synced with the phone. Does that mean they will be stored on the phone?

Can I use those contacts to send email from my other non-gmail accounts?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Ed

They are stored on the phone and can be altered. I believe if you change them on your phone, then re-sync, it will change the contact info in the google account as well.

Yes you can use those contacts in the phone to send email to from other non-Gmail accounts (yahoo, hotmail, etc...).

Welcome to Android! I'm sure you will love it as much as the rest of us do.

That's what I love about these phones!! If you change phones all you have to do is sign in to your GMail account and all your contacts are there. No need for DM like with BB.

I'm sure other people said it well too, I just wanted to completely clarify:

- Your contacts are stored online, in your Gmail account. (Go into Gmail, click Contacts on the left side).
- When you first start up your phone, it downloads all of your Contacts onto your phone and *stores them on your phone*.
- If you make a change to any contact on your phone, *or* online at Gmail, then they will both show the changes the next time it resyncs.
--- This is a very important point, as one time I deleted an important contact while on an airplane, and since it was in airplane mode it didn't sync. I simply deleted the Contact Storage (in application settings), resynced, and it downloaded everything back. Granted, this was back with Android 1.0 or something with my G1, but it should act the same now.

- Any email application I've used pulls the same email addresses that my Gmail account uses... but I've seen it act weird. Like I'll type in a person's first name and it won't pull it up, but if I type the last name or the beginning of the email address itself, it'll pull it up.

I am concerned about using MS Exchange

I purchase my own smart phone, but my employer reimburses me for my data plan.

I have all the information needed to add an exchange email account to my phone.

What I was worried about is the following. I can take all of my contacts out of MS Outlook in a csv file and import them to Gmail. I was concerned about whether or not I could still use those Gmail contact to send an email via my exchange account. Blackberry allows me to manage that info via MS Outlook.

As I understand, from the responses, the Gmail contacts will be loaded on my phone and I can use them for my exchange account - correct? Ima looking to purchase an Android phone with Android version 2.1 or 2.2.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

I sync my contacts through exchange. Exchange pulls in ALL of my contacts. There are also some contacts I sync through GMail and Facebook. I can send an email to any contact through my exchange or gmail regardless of what account it is synced from. In an email, I just type the name and it will pull from all accounts. It will also "link" similar contacts, such as a friend from work, who is also on facebook. I have an HTC EVO. I am not sure if these options are standard across the "Android" board.
